What are the responsibilities and job description for the Meter Reader - Part-time position at City of St. Charles?
Description
This position is responsible for reading electric and water metering devices throughout the City of St. Charles including those meters in the front, back or side of a home or business (possibly inside).
Examples of Duties
- Read meters on a route to record water and electric consumption in a hand-held computer
- Make visual checks of City equipment while on assigned routes to see that meters are functioning properly and that there is no tampering.
- Responsible for travelling on an assigned route in a personal vehicle.
- Adhere to the deadlines for routes to be read.
- May be required to pick up extra routes in the absence of other meter readers.
- Expected to be long-term; however, as our industry evolves with technological advancements, the role may be subject to future changes or transitions over time.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills for interaction with the public.
- Fundamental mathematics skills to calculate rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to write legibly.
- Work under varied and extreme environmental conditions, walking or standing for extended periods of time is required.
- General computer knowledge.
- If selected, successful completion of a background investigation, physical, functional capacity evaluation and drug screen are required.
Supplemental Information
This position pays at a rate of $.52 for each meter read, with an average of 1600 – 2000 per route with 4 cycles per month. Any other administrative work or tasks other than reading meters are paid at an hourly rate of $18.00.
