What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Seasonal Student Laborers position at City of St. Charles?
Description
Seeking self-motivated college students with a positive attitude and good work ethic for summer work in laborer positions in several of our public works divisions. These positions offer an opportunity for students to get hands-on experience working in a Public Works department and exposure to career opportunities in the public services and/or environmental services fields.
Examples of Duties
- Primarily working outside performing manual labor tasks like landscaping, weed removal, plant watering, trash collection, and other general maintenance and clean-up duties.
- Utilize hand and small power tools to accomplish tasks.
- Effectively communicate with full-time staff to complete tasks and projects in a timely manner.
- May work independently or be assigned to work on crews.
- Work shifts are either 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. depending on the division.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent at time of hire.
- Must be enrolled as a college student for the fall of 2025 (upon selection, proof of enrollment will be required).
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
- Able to work outdoors under varying environmental conditions and lift to 80 pounds.
- If selected, successful completion of a background check, drug screen, physical and functional capacity evaluation will be required.
