Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Makes and installs traffic control signs for use on the City right-of-way in compliance to MUTCD and IMSA standards.
- Operates computer-controlled sign design equipment; transfers design onto metal blanks and completes sign fabrication; applies reflective and plastic materials on sign blanks. Must be thoroughly familiar with the manual of uniform traffic control devices and maintenance of traffic techniques.
- Installs loop detectors on City streets and wires into controllers' computers.
- Maintains and repairs and programs school zone flashers, and repairs as required.
- Maintains an alertness for traffic hazards while operation on streets; installs prescribed safety devices on the street for protection of the traffic, City equipment and the safety of all persons involved.
- Installs striping on streets, parking lots, and other locations on the public right-of-way and city owned property.
- Places traffic counters; recovers data from counters and records that data.
- Drives a vehicle to work sites; responsible for the routine maintenance and care of the vehicle; ensures that the vehicle is stocked with parts and supplies for normal and reoccurring field maintenance and repair work.
- Cleans and restocks shop with normally used parts and supplies; initiates re-supply request as required for proper stocking.
- Maintains detailed records of field and shop work for supervision review.
- Answers the telephone and radio and responds to requests for field repairs and adjustments to control equipment and signs in the field; investigates complaints of malfunctions or improper installation of traffic control devices and markings; repairs and adjusts as required.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to maintain a Level I certification in signs and signals by the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) supplemented by two (2) years of responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must possess and maintain a valid state commercial driver's license class A restricted with an acceptable driving history or the ability to obtain within 180 days.
Requires IMSA Level 1 certification in Signals, Signs and Marking or the ability to obtain within 180 days.
Requires Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification or the ability to obtain within 180 days.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to remain stationary; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and communicate. The employee is occasionally required to stand and move. Must be able to routinely and repetitively lift and move up to 25lbs; frequently lift and/ or move 50 lbs.; and occasionally lift and/ or move up to 100lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Mathematics:
Performs technical or trades-based work that requires a solid understanding of basic algebra and statistics. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry. Some of the tasks performed include participating in data collection and detailed analysis and reporting
Language Ability:
Ability to read, analyzes, and interprets general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
