The City of St. Cloud is looking for reliable and motivated individuals to join our Public Works Department as Waste Collection Operators. This is an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner, safer community while operating vehicles and equipment to collect waste materials from designated areas on assigned routes.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Driver/Collector – Sanitation:
Primarily responsible for driving assigned routes and collecting waste materials using various collection vehicles. Hours may vary depending on collection routes, with rotating Saturday hours as needed. If the route cannot be completed during standard working hours, the Driver/Collector must communicate this to the Supervisor.


  • Front Loader: 3:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 
  • Side Loader: 6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. 
  • Clam Truck: 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. 


Driver/Collector – Heavy Equipment:
Primarily focused on operating heavy equipment such as front loaders and tractor-trailers. Preferred candidates will have prior experience with heavy-duty equipment. Hours may vary based on business needs but typically begin as early as 4:00 a.m. and end no later than 6:00 p.m.


  • Heavy Equipment: 4:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. 


Please note that whether you are hired as a Driver/Collector - Sanitation or Driver/Collector - Heavy Equipment, these roles are considered interchangeable based on the operational needs of the City. This flexibility allows us to ensure efficient and reliable service delivery to our community. While your primary responsibilities will align with your designated role, you may be required to perform duties across both classifications as needed.


Both roles include a one-hour unpaid lunch break during your shift. Additionally, you will be required to work until all assigned routes or tasks are completed each day. However, no shift will exceed a maximum of 12 hours. 

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
    

Driver/Collector – Sanitation:

  • Collect waste materials using a semi-automated collection vehicle from assigned locations.
  • Determine which items comply with collection policies and procedures; leave notices for non-compliance.
  • Plan and execute daily routes for clam truck collections, including separation of materials as required.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries about collection services, referring complex issues to the Supervisor.


Driver/Collector – Sanitation & Heavy Equipment:

  • Collect and transport containers from construction sites or other locations to landfills or transfer stations.
  • Operate the clam truck to pick up large or heavy items, including appliances.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections, perform basic maintenance or repairs, and report significant issues to the Supervisor and Vehicle Maintenance team.
  • Clean collection vehicles per departmental policies before or after routes.
  • Prepare written and oral reports as required by the Supervisor.
  • Operate additional equipment such as bulldozers, skid loaders, tractors, and mowers when needed.


Driver/Collector – Heavy Equipment:

  • Operate front loaders and other heavy equipment.
  • Load materials into tractor-trailers for transport.

High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred, with six (6) months of experience operating vehicles in each category (Sanitation and Heavy Equipment) or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Must possess and maintain a valid state Class A driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Prior experience operating heavy equipment is preferred for Driver/Collector – Heavy Equipment.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand; move; reach with hands and arms and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Mathematics:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.


Language Ability:

Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.  Ability to print and speak simple sentences.


Reasoning:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.


Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
