In this specialized role, you will plan, organize, and direct activities for seasonal camps, recreational programs, and events that make a difference in the lives of our residents. You’ll provide training, guidance, and leadership to a team of Leads, Recreation Aides, and volunteers, ensuring the successful execution of programs that reflect the vibrancy and spirit of our community.

Work Hours: Primarily Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed for events.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.           
  • Documents and tracks program participation reviews and analyzes expenditure and revenue information from events and classes for accuracy and variances.
  • Assists in preparation of the recreation budget.
  • Participates in fund raising efforts.
  • Plans and organizes all aspects of day camp operation for assigned site.  Trains Leads, Recreation Aides and volunteers.
  • Plans, develops, and coordinates age and developmentally appropriate camp and recreational program curriculum including but not limited to, crafts, sports, games, drama, nature awareness, trips, speakers and other socialized activities.
  • Implements and monitors age and developmentally appropriate activities.
  • Ensures programs are conducted in an orderly fashion maintaining staff and participant safety, appropriate conduct from participants, and interaction of staff with participants.
  • Develops, enhances and sustains repeat and new working relationships with various organizations, non-profit groups, service clubs, and businesses.
  • Prepares and submits marketing information on city-wide special events, working with new and returning sponsors.
  • Maintains accurate administrative records including but not limited to daily attendance, participant emergency information, accidents reports, newsletters, permission slips, and written correspondence or documentation as required.
  • Maintains inventory of materials/supplies/equipment and submits supply needs in a timely manner.
  • Enforces rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants.  Maintains neatness and cleanliness of activity areas.
  • Administers basic first aid as needed, and reports accidents, injuries, incidents in a timely manner, and in accordance with department and City procedures.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Requires an Associate's degree in Leisure Services or related field supplemented by two (2) years of experience with planning and executing Recreation camps, programs, special events, community activities or related activities; or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
 
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
 
Certification in CPR and a Certification in First AidPhysical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, basic office equipment, telephone, fitness/sports equipment, sound equipment, etc.  Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate, though not constant, physical effort, typically involving some combination of ascending and descending and balancing, stooping, kneeling, position self to crouch and crawl, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds) to moderately heavy (up to 50 pounds).  The employee is frequently required to communicate. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.  Must be able to swim.

Mathematics:
Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time and weight.  Must be able to use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion.

Language Ability:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, budget documents, fitness manuals, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.  Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes giving assignments and/or directions to others and receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisor. Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; to counsel and teach employees.  Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Reasoning:
Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Requires the ability to apply influence systems in managing a staff; to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.  Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.  Required the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, tools, etc.  Routinely works in outside weather conditions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency or unusual situations.  The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a slight degree and to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job. Noise level in work environment is generally loud.
