Job Description

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Outdoor Recreation Supervisor/Coordinator, performs various tasks as

necessary to provide recreation services to the St. George Community. Specifically responsible for providing leadership and oversight of outdoor recreation programs for youth ages 5-17. Serves as the lead staff in charge of setting the highest standard for safety and supervision of up to 12 students in the backcountry. Provides coaching and instruction for the following outdoor activities: bouldering, rock climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, and canoeing. Adheres to and enforces a strong practice of risk management to ensure the safety of both students and staff.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics.   • Provides safety and supervision for up to 12 students during programs and activities, generally taking place in the backcountry.
  • Assists the Instructors to provide coaching and instruction for outdoor activities.
  • Oversees the work of other part time employees and volunteers during assigned shifts or tasks.
  • Assists in staff training, assignments, and recruiting.
  • Provides customer service in person and over the phone; answering questions and/or referring customers to appropriate staff members.
  • Responds to public inquiries providing accurate information regarding recreation programs and services.
  • Aids in the promotion and advertising of programs and special events.
  • Distributes brochures, flyers, schedules, rosters, etc.
  • Organizes, cleans, prepares and maintains recreation facilities and equipment.
  • Works at other City programs and special events as needed.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing other related duties as needed
  • Performs money-handling duties according to City and division policies and procedures.
  • Runs job related errands.
  • Follows all city policies and procedures.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Conditions and temperatures may vary depending on the assignment. Primarily working outdoors sometimes in extreme hot/cold temperatures. Requires the use of vision and/or hearing to identify and evaluate emergencies. Must be able to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies. Requires moderately heavy physical activity exerting 25-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds of force frequently. Mental demands of intermittent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.

Note: Must be available to work weekends, mornings, evenings, holidays, and other schedules to help prepare for recreation offerings. This is a part-time position with variable hours averaging less than 28 hours per week over a period of twelve months.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Instructor I

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience

â- Personal experience participating in and/or leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Professional experience coordinating, programming and leading outdoor recreation activities preferred.

â- Customer Service Experience Preferred.

â- Experience working with youth is preferred.

Licenses And/or Certifications:

â- CPR, First Aid, AED certification required. Must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.

â- Possess a valid driver's license. A valid Utah Driver License must be obtained within 60 days of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

Instructor II

All requirements for Instructor I and in addition

â- Minimum of 1 year of personal experience participating in and/or leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Minimum of 6 months professional (paid) experience coordinating, programming and leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Personal Experience Working With Youth Is Required.

â- Professional experience working with youth is preferred.

â- Customer Service Experience Preferred.

Instructor III

All requirements for Instructor II and in addition

â- Minimum of 2 years of personal experience participating in and/or leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Minimum of 1 year professional (paid) experience coordinating, programming and leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Minimum of 1 year Personal/Professional (paid) experience working with youth is required.

â- Customer Service Experience Required.

One of the following certifications is required and must be maintained throughout employment

â- Lifeguard certification with Waterfront Skills module through the American Red Cross or similar certification

â- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.

â- Single Pitch Climbing Instructor (SPCI) certification through the Professional Climbing Instructors Association (PCIA) or similar certification.

â- Level 1 Mountain Bike Instructor certification through the Professional Mountain Biking Instructors' Association (PMBIA) or similar certification.

Instructor IV

All requirements for Instructor III and in addition

â- Minimum of 3 years of personal experience participating in and/or leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Minimum of 2 years professional (paid) experience coordinating, programming and leading outdoor recreation activities required.

â- Minimum of 2 years Personal/Professional (paid) experience working with youth is required.

â- Customer Service Experience Required.

Two of the following certifications is required and must be maintained throughout employment

â- Lifeguard certification with Waterfront Skills module through the American Red Cross or similar certification

â- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification.
