JOB TITLE: Equipment Operator II

Job Summary/Scope
Operates and maintains equipment to maintain proper sanitary solid waste disposal for citizens of St. Joseph. No supervisory or budgetary responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of trucks, including roll-off, flusher truck, and dump truck.
- Operates a windrow turner and tub grinder to compost yard waste.
- Operates loader to move fences and for special lifting. Operates loader to load a dump truck and scraper, loads metal, and, as necessary, to pull out trucks stuck from wet weather.
- Operates tractors with mower attachments.
- Assists mechanic with overhaul and maintenance when assigned machine is inoperable.
- Performs daily maintenance including checking fluids and oil, fueling and cleaning equipment.
- Trains in the operation dual engine scrapers, compactors and/or bulldozers as assigned.
- Occasionally performs as a laborer when required.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skills in the safe operation of equipment used in the maintenance of the Landfill.
- Knowledge of landfill operations, rules and regulations.
- Ability to read surveyor's marks and build area or projects accordingly.
- Good hand/eye and hand/foot coordination.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform tasks with minimum supervision.
- A Valid State of Missouri Class A CDL with Tanker and Trailer endorsements required
- One to three years of experience in related field required.

Trains in the operation of heavy equipment, such as, dozer, compactor, dual engine scrapers used in the operation of the landfill. Uses a range of hand tools in performance of maintenance duties. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirements
Exposure to extreme weather conditions. Must be able to sit for long periods of time while operating equipment over rough and uneven terrain. Must be able to operate equipment with dexterity. Occasional lifting of 50 pounds and in excess of 50 pounds with assistance, as well as bending, stooping, climbing, reaching and walking over rough terrain. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
