About the position
Under supervision, apply technical skills assisting in the implementation of forestry and other natural resources programs such as : reforestation, tree protection, city wide tree inspections, vegetation code enforcement, providing relevant information to property owners and other city departments on forestry topics, providing forestry and natural resource awareness through public education, and related work.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists the natural resources manager in implementing the city's forestry program.
- Reviews tree protection permits and performs field inspections and enforcement of the city's tree protection ordinances.
- Facilitates the city's reforestation efforts by developing tree planting lists and locations, communicating with tree planting contractors, inspecting contracted work and enforcing planting specifications, and keeping accurate records in asset management software.
- Assists with implementing nuisance tree program, including identification and marking of diseased / infested and hazard trees, determining ownership of trees, recording data, delegating assignments to contractors or city staff, providing education to the public, and monitoring and enforcing the nuisance tree ordinance.
- Facilitate training, provide work direction and assist seasonal tree inspectors.
- Assists with the public property tree care program. This includes responding to resident complaints and inspecting public trees for maintenance and removal needs.
- Perform weed and rank vegetation inspections per city codes and enforce compliance.
- Work with manager to collect information to help with preparation of grants.
- Coordinate activities with other departments and agencies at the direction of supervisor.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of urban forestry volunteer and outreach activities including the city's annual Arbor Day celebration and Westwood Hills Nature Center woodland restoration plantings.
- Keep supervisor informed and make recommendations on critical issues.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This position requires occasional night and weekend event work.

Do you have a high school degree or equivalent?
Do you have at least two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of training and work experience?

Do you have a valid MN driver's license?
Do you have a MnDNR Tree Inspector License or able to obtain one within 30 days of hire?
Are you ISA Certified Arborist certified or able to be within 12 months of hire?
Do you have work experiences in identifying tree species and plant pests?
