Assist Engineering staff in the delivery of public improvement projects and the day to day operations of the Engineering Department.This is a seasonal position, working up to 40 hours per week from May - December 2025.1. Design and Plan Preparation
- Assist engineering technicians with computations and calculations to design simple to moderately complex public infrastructure improvement projects such as streets, sanitary sewer and storm sewer conveyance systems, storm water detention ponds, water main, sidewalks, and trails.
- Perform quantity take-offs and prepare cost estimates.
- Perform construction observation in the absence of the engineering technician to ensure construction is consistent with approved plans, specifications and contract requirements.
- Respond to questions; receive, investigate, and resolve complaints from the public relative to the department operations, construction, or services.
- Assist engineering technicians in the measurement and documentation of construction contract quantities.
- Establish construction limits and set line & grade for various public improvements.
- Complete field surveys using electronic total station equipment.
- Perform level loop surveys to establish and maintain survey benchmarks.
- Perform measurements and develop ties to valves, service connections, and other elements of public improvements projects.
- Transfer as-built information from field plans to permanent original plans.
- Maintain department project files for assigned projects; file and archive all associated paperwork in accordance with the city's records retention schedule.
- Monitor and verify construction of privately installed public infrastructure.
- Assist in the inspection of permit conditions for public works permits.
- Prepare maps and graphic illustrations for use in reports and public presentations.
- Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.
- Current student or recent graduate of a 4 year Civil Engineering program or 2 year Civil Technology program.
- Ability to learn and use principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to municipal infrastructure projects and basic knowledge of the materials, methods, and techniques used in the construction of municipal projects.
- Previous internship or seasonal work related to civil or municipal engineering.
- AutoCAD proficiency.
- Experience with GIS software.
- Ability to use electronic total station instruments.
- Demonstrated cultural competence and comfort with supporting the city’s strategic objectives for advancing racial equity.
Salary : $18 - $20
