Incumbents in this position investigate alleged violations of city and state corrections policies and procedures. Duties include interviewing witnesses and participants; drafting written reports and summaries; coordinating investigations with other law enforcement agencies; documenting and photographing physical evidence and testifying at legal proceedings.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Plans and conducts interviews of participants in and witnesses to alleged violations of policies and procedures.
- Collects statements and observes institution activities.
- Writes and submits written investigation reports/summaries to appropriate authorities.
- Documents physical evidence.
- Takes photographs.
- Delivers subpoenas and performance notifications to corrections personnel.
- Coordinates investigations with other law enforcement personnel.
- Testifies at hearings and legal proceedings.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Data Utilization: Requires the ability to perform mid-level data analysis including the ability to audit, deduce, assess, conclude and appraise. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to establish criteria to define consequences and develop alternatives.
- Human Interaction: Requires the ability to persuade and convince correctional officers, other law enforcement personnel and detainees. Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
- Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as tape recorder, still camera, video camera, computer terminal/typewriter, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
- Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as detainee records, photos, lab reports, attendance records, subpoenas, performance notifications, investigation reports, vehicle maintenance reports, orders, inmate handbook, ordinances, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
- Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems such as planning, coordinating and controlling. Ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.
- Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable.
- Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such irate individuals, intimidation, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.
- Physical Requirements: Requires lifting files, stooping to retrieve files, and climbing stairs. Requires the ability to stand for long periods to observe institution activities and sustain prolonged visual concentration.
- Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of shapes, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks to recognize objects clearly to observe detainees and sounds and odors to detect irregularities in security and detect contraband and conduct investigation interviews.
An Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Corrections or a related field; plus one year of experience working as an investigator in a correctional, law enforcement or similar agency. OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Veterans Preference Points

City Residence Preference Points
City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
