What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Operator or Trainee position at City of St Martinville?
Efficiently perform physical work/paperwork needed to maintain compliance and maintain operations of the City Water system.
1. Reports to: Water System Manager and Wastewater System Manager.
2. Other: Communicates professionally with other employees, administrators, and public.
This position requires the physical and technical ability to maintain the infrastructure and the compliance of the City’s Water system. Duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining the Water system equipment and facilities, collecting samples and chemical testing, daily/monthly/quarterly/ annual reporting, and routine plant and field operations.
· Checking chemical storage levels and ability to change out chlorine cylinders with another employee present (document serial number of cylinder and maintain record of delivery);
· Daily check of the Water Treatment Plant and facilities(observe and inspect plumbing and mechanical equipment, chemical levels, pump run hours, adjustments/installation of A/C and heaters due to weather, insulation installation for cold weather, chlorination system maintenance when supervised);
· Basic electrical troubleshooting (fuses, contactors, overloads, and float switches)
· Ability to use a volt meter to check voltage and amperage;
· Maintain plant records;
· Maintain daily log with maintenance and daily duties;
· Ability to maneuver well around excavation sites and assist with leaks when needed;
· Ability to operate equipment needed to maintain the grounds at all Water system facilities (cutting grass, weed eating, spraying weeds, removing vines from fence, removing trees from fence);
· Collect water samples and process proper paperwork, bring samples to lab and complete chain of custody;
· Checking daily residuals at the POE and MRT;
· Checking monthly residuals at ACRs;
· Proficient with computers/preferably Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel;
· Assisting Water System Manager with paperwork needed to meet compliance with LDH;
· Ability to read blueprints and perform work needed to complete valve maintenance, hydrant maintenance, meter maintenance, and field work for grants/regulations;
· Employee will be subject to emergency call-outs on a rotational schedule;
· When on call, employee must be available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week;
· Employee arrives to work on time and maintains a reliable level of attendance;
· Assist Wastewater system with checking lift stations (amperage of motors, dipping trash from wet well, maintaining facility grounds.
Employees may be responsible for/perform other duties that are not listed on the above statement.
· Ability to lift over 60 pounds;
· Driving and maintaining vehicle;

· Pulling/pushing hoses, equipment, and hand tools;
· Standing, kneeling for long periods of time;
· Holding equipment with a good grip;
· Vision and hearing needed to assess equipment and gauges.
· Weather - Ability to withstand exposure to both cold and warm temperatures;
· Working outdoors - Ability to work both day and night with different weather conditions;
· Confined spaces - Ability to work in tight/confined spaces;
· Odors/Chemicals - Exposure to odors due to chemicals, electrical, mechanical, and toxic waste hazards, using proper PPE
· Safety - Ability to use good judgement to work safely and use equipment properly
· High School Diploma required
· Ability to follow written and oral instructions;
· Ability to work with/without supervision;
· Ability to attend training courses and test for certifications
· Ability to assess equipment and facilities for any problems
· Ability to make independent decisions in a timely manner
· Valid driver’s license required
· Class I, II, or III Certification in Water Treatment, Production, and Distribution through Louisiana Department of Health a plus;
· If no certifications are present, you must be able to obtain a Class I certification within 18 months of the hire date. The goal is to achieve Class III certifications as required by Louisiana Department of Health.
