Ditch Maintenance Crew Leader

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for overseeing the ditch cleaning operation of the staff on the crew.

As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employees specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.

MAJOR DUTIES

1. Leads a four person crew.

2. Operates heavy equipment.

3. Ensures the crew is correctly executing their duties.

4. Ensures job is completed with efficiency.

5. Ensures employees are properly trained.

6. Provides guidance to the crew.

7. Provides quality customer service.

8. Provides a positive representation for the City.

9. Troubleshoots problems.

10. Adheres to policies and procedures.

11. Improves work skills on a continual basis.

12. Performs all other duties as assigned.

9. Skill in overseeing or guiding the crew to ensure assigned projects are completed and crew feels respected.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Roads and Ditches Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include department policies, procedures, work order guidelines, supervisor’s directions, and local ordinances. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of variety of supervisory, training, and maintenance duties. Weather, terrain, and pests contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to oversee the ditch cleaning operation of the staff on the crew. Success in this position contributes to efficient and effective operations of this department.

• Contacts are typically with crewmembers.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, sitting, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light objects and occasionally lift heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes a sense of smell.

• The work is performed in a noisy place or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, and grease, machinery with moving parts, and contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, and gloves.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent required; and

• More than two years of related experience required; or

• Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.

• Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

• CDL Class B license.
