About the Position
The City of Saint Paul Regional Water Services (SPRWS) is seeking individuals to join our Supply Systems team. As a Utility Trainee, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform a variety of tasks while receiving training to obtain your Driver's License.
Candidates hired now will be joining at an exciting time as they will have the opportunity to promote onto the water distribution team where SPRWS has just launched a new program to remove all lead service lines from their service area over the coming years.
Here's what you can expect to do:
- Work for extended periods of time performing manual labor maintenance work on varied terrain, including trimming, planting and seeding, watering, trash cleanup, grass cutting, shoveling, and emptying trash containers.
- Assist watershed crews in operations including hauling brush and debris, chipping brush, assisting in the installation of fences, and other related duties.
- Learn about the SPRWS water production and distribution systems and how to perform work related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of system components.
- Learn to operate equipment including walk behind weed whips, brush cutters, hedgers, blowers, shovels, lawn mowers, wheelbarrows and other tools and equipment as directed.
- Lift and carry equipment, tools, and supplies of up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Bend, crawl, climb, shovel, and stoop for long periods of time, and walk, lift, push, pull, stoop, and stand on uneven and slippery surfaces.
- Perform routine equipment maintenance which may include checking oil, tire greasing, changing blades, etc. Learn to make minor repairs and report abnormalities.
- Learn to drive vehicles related to operations and maintenance tasks. Take steps to obtain a MN Class D driver's license, if not already licensed.
- Operate in difficult, hazardous, and unpredictable work environments such as rain, snow, ice, and high winds. May be exposed to fumes, irritants, and/or gases.

Information Specific to this Position:
This position is located at Saint Paul Regional Water Services, 1900 Rice Street, Saint Paul, 55113. Utility Trainees works outdoors in all types of weather and are scheduled for weekday daytime shifts Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Position Requirements
Must be at least 17 years of age.
Additional Information:
- SPRWS Utility Trainee employees who pass the trainee program and have obtained a Class D Driver’s License will be eligible to apply for a Water Utility Worker I position.
- Failure to obtain a Class D driver’s license will result in termination of employment. Extensions due to extenuating circumstances may be considered.
- If at any point it is determined by the department that the trainee is unable to successfully complete the Utility Trainee duties or meet the requirements of a Water Utility Worker I, the trainee may be terminated.
