Position Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Traffic Technician to join our team. This role involves the maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signals, street lights, and intelligent transportation system (ITS) facilities. The position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and managing both physical and mental demands. This role involves working both independently and as part of a team.

Normal Shift: 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Traffic and Street Light Maintenance: Perform skilled tasks related to the repair, maintenance, installation, and inspection of traffic signal and street light facilities. Respond to 24-hour emergency repair requests for traffic signals and street lights according to department on-call procedures.
  • Data Collection: Collect and assist in evaluating traffic studies, including gathering traffic volume data.
  • Utility and Equipment Management: Assist with utility locates for streetlights, traffic signals, and fiber optic systems. Assist with operation of vacuum trucks for Traffic Department equipment installation as needed. Safely and efficiently operate a bucket truck to perform daily tasks.
  • Material Management: Order materials and supplies as needed for maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Collaboration and Compliance: Work effectively with utility companies and contractors to ensure compliance with approved plans and standards, providing technical assistance and coordinating work completion. Review and respond to traffic signal, street lighting, and signage plans.
  • Customer Service: Address and resolve customer and resident inquiries, concerns, and complaints.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain and update computerized central signal control systems, updating records and databases (including GIS systems) related to projects and maintenance work.
  • Safety and Standards: Adhere to City safety standards and perform general labor associated with work zone and roadway traffic control.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a US citizen or lawfully authorized alien worker.
  • High School graduate or GED certificate and four (4) years of applicable experience; or Associate of Science degree in Engineering Technology, Electronics, and Communications Technology or closely related field from an accredited institution and two (2) years of applicable experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Be certified as an IMSA Signal Traffic Field Technician Level I or be able to obtain such certifications within one year of hire.
  • Must have a Class "B" or above CDL valid in the state of Missouri, or obtain within 120 days of employment. Commercial driver instruction permit (CDIP) must be obtained within 60 days of employment.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of specialized light equipment.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or
    move more than 100 lbs.
  • Cannot be colorblind.
  • Certification as IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician or be able to obtain within one (1) year.
