The City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is one of 171 American Public Works Association (APWA) certified agencies in the nation and we continue to grow, delivering award winning projects such as the internationally recognized new St. Pete Pier, as well as awards for infrastructure upgrades and sustainability. The Engineering & Capital Improvements Department will be embarking on major infrastructure projects and extensive system capacity upgrades, implementing both the integrated water and wastewater master plan which includes water, wastewater, reclaimed water and stormwater master plans. Also included in this infrastructure upgrades are roads, bridges, and seawalls, as well as vertical assets such as the new Shore Acres Recreational Center, all focused on resiliency and sustainability.
With such a major replacement and upgrade program, the City of St. Petersburg Engineering & Capital Improvements Department is looking to expand its team to include additional Engineers, Project Managers, Architects, and other essential staff to be part of delivering and advancing its community into a new era.
This is technical civil engineering related work for the Engineering & Capital Improvements Department performing design, cost estimations and evaluating the construction, alteration or repair of complex public works and capital improvement projects. Work involves preparing preliminary and final engineering designs and specifications through the use of survey data, project drawings and verbal descriptions; using a CADD computer aided design system to create designs and draft computational specifications; preparing preliminary project plans including the estimation of material quantity and labor costs; and interpreting civil engineering designs and specifications to include the identification and location of water mains, private utilities, easements and existing structures. Work includes the review of construction plans, drawings, and specifications to determine if there are any errors or if there are any conflicts between any existing and proposed designs; making recommendations for alternative courses of action and design plans; and maintaining engineering related special use maps, charts, graphs, and drawings and preparing and maintaining detailed reports, permit documents and records. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent judgment, initiative, and ingenuity; productive interaction with City employees, other governmental agencies, consultants, contractors and the public; the ability to competently and independently manage a workload that may include competing demands and challenging deadlines; the application of professional engineering knowledge in evaluating the cost effectiveness, safety and practicality of construction designs; and preparing and maintaining detailed reports on projects.
Salary: $26.96 - $42.44 Hourly

To Qualify
Minimum Qualifications. Applicants Must:
- Have a valid Bachelor’s degree with considerable coursework in civil engineering and have two years of engineering related experience - or - in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, must have a valid high school diploma or GED combined with considerable college coursework in design, drafting, engineering, or related field, and have six years of engineering experience related to public works construction activities.
- Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
- Have considerable knowledge of modern engineering methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction and maintenance of water, wastewater and public works related infrastructure, including performing cost analysis of such projects.
- Be able to perform complex mathematical calculations related to civil engineering activities.
- Be skilled in the use of a personal computer and computer software including Word, Excel, the latest Geographic Information System (GIS) application, and the latest Civil 3D drafting application.
- Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:
Have significant previous experience performing engineering design work for public utility and capital improvement projects related to a government entity.Selection Process
