What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Legal Assistant position at City of St. Petersburg?

This responsible civilian position will work assisting attorneys in asset forfeiture and nuisance abatement, will conduct legal related research, and will assist on legal processes relevant to the Police Department’s Legal Division including vehicle impounds, trespass appeals, case law, and legislative analysis. This position will assist the Police Department’s Legal Division in the preparation of civil litigation documents and perform administrative and research functions. Work includes the investigation of nuisance conduct; the investigation of forfeiture-related records; maintaining excellent written and electronic logs and records; operating an unmarked police vehicle; and conducting meticulous computer-based work in a fast-paced law firm style environment.
Salary: $25.08 - $39.71 Hourly

To Qualify
Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:
- Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
- Have two (2) or more years of experience as a law clerk, legal assistant, or paralegal.
- Be skilled in the use of Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel, with an aptitude for learning the remaining components of Microsoft Office).
- Be able to objectively analyze situations and determine the proper course of action.
- Be able to cope with difficult interpersonal situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, and to respect the constitutional rights of others.
- Be able to understand, retain and follow complex rules, regulations, orders, and instructions, delivered both in writing and orally.
- Be able to react quickly, calmly, and appropriately under emergency conditions.
- Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:
- Possess a valid Associate’s degree in legal studies or related field.
- Are a Certified Paralegal.
- Have considerable knowledge of applicable state laws and municipal ordinances necessary for effective completion of duties.
- Have considerable knowledge of the geography of the city and surrounding areas.
