Dept/Div: Stafford Pool

Reports to: Director of Recreation & Performing Arts

Pay based on experience $11.00 to $16.00 per hour
The City of Stafford Aquatic Staff ensures the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies. The City is now hiring lifeguards for the season. Below is a list of the skills needed to be a member of the Stafford Aquatic Staff.
Duties And Responsibilities
Head Lifeguard - Must be at least 17 years of age, 2 years of experience is required. Must be able to pass Lifeguarding and CPR classes. Must be available for both sessions of swim lessons. Head Lifeguard responsible for insuring all City of Stafford Lifeguards are trained in the correct implementation of swim lessons to insure all patrons have the chance to be successful. Head Lifeguard is also responsible for managing the facility and staff in the absence of the Pool Manager/Assistant Manager. Pay based on experience $14.00 to $17.00 per hour
Minimum City of Stafford Lifeguard Qualifications - Swim 500 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

- Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
- Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services (lifeguards).
- Presents professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintains a high standard of customer service.
- Performs various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Prepares and maintains appropriate activity reports.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques (lifeguards).
- Ability to pass a pre-employment physical skills evaluation as stipulated by the department (lifeguards).
- Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
- Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures (lifeguards).
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
- Ability to read and comprehend manuals and forms, accurately complete all paperwork as required, following the established procedures.

- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
- Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds (swim goggles are not allowed)
- Starting in the water, swim 25 yards.
- Surface dive, feet-first, to a depth of 4 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 25 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping "the face" at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
