What are the responsibilities and job description for the Human Resources Intern position at CITY OF STARKVILLE?
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is limited to no more than 25 hours per week in an assignment designed to accommodate a student internship or co-op participant in a public administration, or business job function, or a job closely related to the student’s field of study in support of the Human Resources Department.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in a wide variety of administrative and professional tasks in the Human Resources Department.
- Provide research assistance, writes reports, and make recommendation on matters under study.
- Acquire working knowledge of department practices, procedures, equipment and organization system.
- Schedules drug testing and physicals for new applicants and processes related payments; receives results of drug/physical testing; advises supervisor of results.
- Answers the telephone and screens incoming calls; responds to inquiries, complaints, and concerns; takes and receives messages and routes to appropriate staff, and conducts telephone inquiries to verify information.
- Assist in the enhancement of the department’s record keeping system by organizing and computerizing files.
- Maintains strict confidentiality of all personnel actions, information, discussions and related information pertinent to the activities/operations of the Human Resource Department.
- Interacts directly with colleagues, clientele, and/or other internal or external constituencies in the planning of assignments and the resolution of day-to-day operational problems.
- Engage in special projects and other similar tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Microsoft Excel and Word, and ability to learn new technology systems very quickly and efficiently.
- Expected to learn various zoning, planning and redevelopment procedures.
- Expected to learn various ordinances, laws, and regulations pertaining to all aspects of urban planning and development.
Skills and Ability to:
- Work alternating shifts, hours and days including nights.
- Handle multiple tasks simultaneously with frequent interruptions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely orally and in writing, and to keep records and prepare reports.
- Follow Department and City policies and procedures operating with minimum supervision.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
- This internship requires that the student be enrolled in a college/university working toward a degree in a related discipline, or a student who has graduated from college no more than six (6) months prior to placement as an intern.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess and maintain a valid Mississippi Driver’s License and acceptable MVR.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Direct deposit is required.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is essentially sedentary with occasional walking, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting light objects. Work requires physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs and body in the operation of a computer and other office machines and equipment.
