The City of Steamboat Springs is seeking a Slope Maintenance and Grooming Foreman to join their team!


GENERAL PURPOSE   

Supervises and performs a variety of supervisory, skilled, and technical tasks in the maintenance and operation of a ski area, slope maintenance and its facilities. 


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Howelsen Hill Supervisor.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED 

Supervises full-time Maintenance Technicians, seasonal employees, volunteers, contractors, and other staff as assigned. May supervise temporary and community service workers as required. Supervises up to 10 employees at any given time.

Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.


Motivates and evaluates assigned staff, reviews progress, and directs changes as needed.


Issues written and oral instructions; inspects work for exactness, neatness and conformance to policies and procedures.


Disciplines employees performing the duties of maintenance and operations of the division as required following established City protocols.


Oversees contractors and work crews performing maintenance and construction projects at Howelsen Hill Ski Area


Reviews and approves timesheets for maintenance workers and seasonal employees.


Summer Specific Duties

Assists lift maintenance personnel in the maintenance of lift infrastructure.


Assists Rodeo staff in the maintenance of the Rodeo grounds and associated infrastructure.


Performs maintenance activities on the buildings and grounds at Howelsen Hill Ski Area


Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to the supervisor or mechanic.


Assist and purchases tools, equipment, materials, and other supplies necessary to ski area and facilities maintenance.


Assists in the construction of new lifts and ski area facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, foundation work and contractor oversight.

Manages the Howelsen Hill asset management plan to ensure all infrastructure is accounted for and properly documented to assist on budget preparation and decrease inventory deferred maintenance projects


Assists in the planning, management, and coordination of special events held at Howelsen Hill and Rodeo Complex


Assists Supervisor with project management for capital improvement projects and provides professional advice to Supervisor. 


Oversees contractors and work crews performing maintenance and construction projects at Howelsen Hill Ski Area


Winter Specific Duties

Hires, onboards, trains, schedules, and supervises Maintenance Technician and seasonal grooming and snowmaking staff for Howelsen Hill Ski Area.


Coordinates snowcat service and maintenance functions with the City Fleet department to ensure machines are maintained and available for use.


Coordinates with staff at steamboat springs Winter Sports Club to balance grooming priorities between competitive training and events and public skiable product.


Leads snowmaking operations to ensure adequate snow depths, efficient snow gun placement and operation, and efficiencies in performance of snowmaking and grooming crews are achieved.


Leads crew and performs maintenance of Ski area related infrastructure including signage, snowmaking hose and hydrants, painting, lift maintenance, lift shacks, and Howelsen Hill lodge.


Leads crew and performs snowmaking duties including carrying and moving snowmaking hoses and cords, digging out snow guns, facilitating snow gun moves and adhering to an established snowmaking plan.


Leads crew and serves as a Lift Foreman in the safe operation of lifts, checking lift passes, learning the mechanical operation of all lifts and daily safety inspection requirements.


Possesses a working knowledge of Colorado Passenger Transportation Safety Board rules and regulations regarding the safe operation of lifts.


May fulfill other duties at Howelsen Hill based upon skill level and qualifications. These duties may include ski patrol, ticket office, tubing operations, or grooming operations.

Performs skilled maintenance on snow making equipment and pumphouse machinery up to and including motors, drives, pumps, compressors, nozzles, nucleators, mechanical and electrical equipment.


Performs skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of ski jumps, lift shacks, vaults, and other ski area specific infrastructure.


Operates snow cats, snowmobiles, snow making equipment, ski lifts, plow trucks, skid steers and utility vehicles.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.


Education and Experience:

(A) Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and

(B) At least three (3) years of experience as a Parks Maintenance Technician II for the City of Steamboat Springs; or

(C) Seven (7) years of experience in parks maintenance and operation

(D) Five (5) years of experience operating medium to heavy equipment and small equipment and hand tools.

(E) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

(A)Extensive knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in ski areas, building and grounds maintenance; Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used to do minor repairs; Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.

(B)Skilled in the operation of listed tools and equipment.

  1. Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule. 
  2. Ability to lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and to perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. 
  3. Ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely. 
  4. Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions. 
  5. Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  6. Computer skills required: Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn Outlook, Kronos, NeoGov and other relevant systems.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 

Commercial Driver’s License required.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Pickup truck, backhoe, excavator, skid steer, lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, miscellaneous hand and power tools, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, filtration devices, gauges, etc; snowcats, snowmaking guns, snowmobiles, dump truck, water truck.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.


May be on-call and required to work weekends, holidays and nights during peak equipment use times and special events 


Work on snow covered or wet, slippery side slopes while carrying a load.


The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
