The City of Steamboat Springs is seeking Summer Camp Counselors to join their team! 

Incentive Bonuses Include:
$2/hour for each hour worked contingent on successful completion of summer season
$200 stipend for staff who have Lifeguard Training contingent on successful completion of summer season 
$200 stipend for staff who are over age 20 and are qualified drivers contingent on successful completion of summer season

GENERAL PURPOSE

General Staff Member for school year and summer licensed day care programs.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Recreation Coordinators


SUPERVISION EXERCISED

NoneServes as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while always espousing safety.


These duties and responsibilities are to be performed in cooperation with Youth Program Coordinators and Supervisor.  They are subject to change according to the changing demands of the service community.  The required duties and responsibilities are not limited to those listed here.  Duties are currently related to the following programs:


Afterschool Action Program, ASSET Clubs, School Days Off, Kid’s Night Out, Summer Camps, Theme Camps, Community Events


Youth Programs:

  • Works as general staff member in seasonal programs, present during operations of scheduled program hours, including nights and weekends
  • Helps plan and execute daily activities in a safe, age-appropriate environment.
  • Help to enforce all rules and guidelines for programs.
  • Serve as liaison between program participants (i.e. venders/families) and Recreation Division.   Respond to public inquiries by phone, email, text, and other means as required
  • Maintain the inventory and physical quality, cleanliness and safety of any program supplies, facilities, equipment, tools, food, and vehicles.  

General Operations

  • Maintain personal trainings and certifications as required by the state.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Peripheral Duties:

Attend staff meetings and trainings, divisional, departmental, and organizational


Assumes the responsibilities of the Program Coordinator or Director in his/her absence.

Education and Experience: 

  • Over the age of 18 recommended 
  • Over the age of 16 required
  • 480 hours verified experience with children

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Must have a passion for working with children
  2. Knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration; Knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program. 
  3. Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which may include running, swimming, hiking, lifting, team building initiatives, physical games, and creative programs.
  4. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment. 
  5. Ability to work in a variety of climates, indoor and outdoor, and may include 
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public; 
  7. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  8. General knowledge of State of Colorado licensing rules and regulation, Colorado Department of Health and the Environment rules and regulation.

Special Requirements:

Valid state driver's license if applicable 

First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain

Must pass criminal CBI, FBI, Motor Vehicle, and Dept. of Human Services background check

Ability to obtain all certifications as required by the State of Colorado Dept. of Early Learning

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, including word processing and data base software; calculator; copy machine; phone; mobile or portable radio; automobile; pick-up truck, 15 passenger van (as applicable)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, twist, lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Employee may be expected to snowboard beginner to advanced terrain with the Snowboard Outreach Society Program. 


The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee often works in outside weather conditions. The employee is often exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, snow, rain, and/or strong sun.


The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when on site.
