The City of Steamboat Springs is now recruiting an Fleet Technician in our Transit Division! Put your talents and skills to work to contribute to our vibrant community!
The qualified individual performs semi-skilled, skilled, and administrative work in diagnosing and maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment of the Transit department, primarily the Transit fleet of buses.
This person works under the supervision of the Fleet Superintendent.
At times, this position may be responsible for assigning work to other Fleet Mechanics and for communication with all Departments and operators regarding proper operation of vehicles/equipment and shop tools and procedures. Will assist in a supervisory role when Fleet Superintendent is absent on a rotating basis.Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while always espousing safety.
Plans, carries out and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.
Operates a variety of diagnostic computers and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
Tests, services and repairs vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Inspects, adjusts and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
Repairs brakes, engines, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, HVAC, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems on gas and diesel vehicles.
Performs specialized cutting and welding of metal including fabrication and design.
Changes and repairs tires and tubes.
Evaluates status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and performs or schedules needed repairs.
Conducts various analysis and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.
Purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for vehicle and mechanical system maintenance.
Provides emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and appropriate.
Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and mechanical equipment.
Assists in the preparation and administration of mechanical budgets in conformance with adopted policies and procedures.
Maintains records, prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment using Fleet Management software.
May be on-call and required to work week-ends during peak equipment use times.
Develops shop procedures and budget data for the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical systems.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school diploma or GED equivalent plus some specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
- Three (3) years of related experience, or
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of automotive, heavy truck and equipment mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
- Skill in operation of diagnostic computers, software, and listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
- Knowledge of Metallurgy.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to maintain one.
Must have own tools. Specialized tools will be provided by the City.
Will be on call from November 1st to April 1st and be available by pager for Fleet emergencies – 24/7. On call may rotate week to week. This includes weekends and Holidays.
