The City of Steamboat Springs Utility Division in the Public Works Department is pleased to announce we are hiring two Utility Operators.  Put your talents and skills to work to contribute to our vibrant community!

This individual  performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City water distribution and wastewater collection facilities and systems.

$1,000 signing bonus!

Depending on the level of certification you have, pay and job requirements may vary as follows:
Utility Operator I: $25.40 - $34.29/hr.
Utility Operator II: $27.94 - $37.72/hr.
Utility Operator III: $30.74 - 41.49/hr. Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.  

Performs the following:
Distribution:  Emergency and non-emergency operation and repair of mains, pumps, tanks and appurtenances; installation, maintenance, and repair of various types of mains and appurtenances including; various makes of fire hydrants, valves, services lines, etc.; fire hydrant flushing and inspection; water testing; pressure testing; general building maintenance; pump operation and repair; meter repair, inspection, testing and reading; valve box repair; ability to read and interpret maps; inspection of mains and service lines; installation of water taps using various types of tapping equipment; operation of various types of locating equipment; operation of logic and control equipment.
 
Collection:  Emergency and non-emergency operation and repair of mains and appurtenances; sewer main cleaning using mechanical/hydraulic cleaning equipment; operation of video inspection equipment; installation and repair of mains including manholes, services, etc.; ability to install service taps on sewer mains using various tapping procedures.
 
Assists with implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation  activities designed to provide quality utility systems for the city.
 
Assists in the training of lower level employees performing the duties of maintenance, construction and repair of water and sewer mains, streets, parks, pathways and storm drainage facilities.
 
Inspects and/or repairs water and wastewater system components at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
 
Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections and maintenance activities of water/sewer mains, manholes, fire hydrants, valves, water storage tanks, pumps, buildings and vaults.
 
Determines the locations of water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.  Performs locates of water/sewer system and appurtenances using specialized locating equipment.
 
Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
 
Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel, sand and snow.
 
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor or mechanic.
 
Cleans equipment.
 
Proficient operation of medium-sized to heavy construction and power equipment, such as backhoe, loader, tandem axle trucks, graders, etc.
 
Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
 
Performs required labor involved in construction, maintenance, and repair of broken water/sewer mains as part of a crew; including pavement cutting, ditch digging, pavement repair, snow removal etc.
 
Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment.
 
Responds to service requests including water shut offs/turn ons.
 
Performs all duties in the maintenance of water and sewer easements including removal of trees, using equipment to clear grass, brush and grading to allow access for sewer and water equipment. 

Education and Experience:

  1. Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and
  2. Two (2) years of experience relating to operation, construction, maintenance, repair, or replacement of water and sewer systems.
  3. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
  2. Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  3. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  4. Shall have or obtain Colorado State Class 1 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Certification within the first 12 months of employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 
 
This position requires a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within the first 12 months of employment. The city will pay for the CDL and assist with the CDL process for the individual selected if they do not currently have a CDL.
 
Shall have or obtain Colorado State Class 2 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Certification within the first 36 months of employment.
 
Will be required to be "on-call" during non-scheduled hours. 

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

 

All medium to heavy equipment and motorized vehicles, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, motor grader, street roller, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, tapping equipment, sewer video equipment, sewer cleaning equipment, chainsaw, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch, controls/SCADA equipment, and personal computer.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places, manholes, open trenches, and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

 

If assigned to snow plowing and/or removal, and water/sewer breaks and repairs, will be required to work night shifts, often consecutive. 

 

Must work variable shifts as assigned.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.



Compensation range is $25.40 - $41.49 per hour and placement within the range is dependent upon relevant experience and qualifications.
