The City of Steamboat Springs has a part time seasonal position available as a Winch Cat Operator.
GENERAL PURPOSE
Operates a winch snowcat for highly skilled operational tasks. These tasks include building, grooming, and maintaining ski jumps in the jump complex. Building and maintaining skiable terrain on the Face of Howelsen Hill and other runs as necessary. Performing winch cat grooming for high level Alpine ski races.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Howelsen Hill Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Occasionally supervises less experienced grooming staff.
Winter
Operates snowcats and winch snow cat safely and in accordance to Parks department and City Fleet Department standards.
Utilizes the winch cat to build, groom, and maintain all jumps in the ski jump complex.
Works in a highly technical and skilled setting both during the day and at night to groom ski jumps that meet FIS standards with a safe and predictable surface.
Utilizes the winch cat to move machine made snow to put ski runs together in steep terrain on Howelsen Hill Face and other areas.
Utilizes the winch cat to build features including freestyle mogul courses and jumps for various training and competition purposes.
Operates other snowcats as necessary to assist grooming staff with Alpine and Nordic terrain grooming tasks.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
May occasionally fulfill other roles including running lifts and snowmaking at Howelsen Hill.
Education and Experience:
(A)Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and
(B)Two (2) years of experience relating to grooming and winch cat operations
Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
(A)Knowledge of winch cat operation and grooming techniques.
(B)Skill in operation of various types of snowcats with an emphasis on building snow features
(C)Ability safely operate snowcats and grooming equipment; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public;
(D)Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Valid State of Colorado Driver’s license
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Winch snow cats, Alpine and Nordic snow cats, and various other pieces of grooming equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to extreme temperatures and wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
Likely to be required to work weekends and holidays.
Work on snow covered or wet slippery side slopes while carrying a load.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
