PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the cleaning, maintenance, and minor repair of public facilities; uses hand tools, power hand tools, and operates light equipment in the course of work; assists with routine maintenance or repair tasks to support the functions of a division in a City department or division.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under general supervision of the Divisions Operations Coordinator or Division Superintendent, the Custodian operates within the City of Sterlings policies/procedures and quality standards while performing the following essential functions and responsibilities: (Essential functions are those functions that the individual who holds the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)
1. Maintains floor areas by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, stripping, and buffing per established schedules, vacuums carpeted areas on a regular basis and shampoos as needed, waxes floors and stairs, dusts and cleans office areas at City facilities including furniture, blinds, curtains, office equipment, and handrails, cleans windows, surfaces, and appliances (counter tops, refrigerators, microwaves, coffee pots, ovens and sinks.
2. Cleans, sanitizes, and disinfects drinking fountains, restrooms, and locker rooms. Cleans and/or polishes windows, doors, walls, handrails, gym equipment, and mirrors as needed. Ensures restrooms and locker rooms are stocked with sufficient supplies including soap, towels, and toilet tissue.
3. Removes trash from all offices, restrooms, meeting rooms, and general public areas. Relines trash cans with liners. Keeps immediate outside area free of trash and debris. Cleans outside ashtrays, shovels snow and maintains sidewalks and entryways as necessary. Apply sand/salt mixture as needed. Ensures buildings are locked and secured as needed.
4. Performs and logs preventive maintenance for equipment; cleans and cares for all tools and equipment needed for job assignment; checks and maintains fluid levels of equipment; schedules routine maintenance of equipment and reports and takes out of service malfunctioning equipment;
5. Performs custodial duties according to established schedules either daily, weekly, monthly or annually.
6. Utilizes appropriate department-issued personal protective equipment following all applicable safety rules and regulations;
7. Due to the nature of the work, employee may have frequent access to confidential areas, documents, and meetings, and must ensure confidentiality at all times.
8. Performs other related functions as otherwise assigned, delegated or required by the Divisions Operations Coordinator or Division Superintendent.
SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: Has no responsibility for supervision.
Physical Requirements:
1. Physical requirements include ability to extend hands(s) and arm(s) in any direction; pick, pinch, work with fingers and palm as well as whole hand; lift fifty (50) pounds; some lifting and carrying objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; some pushing, pulling, and climbing; move about on foot to accomplish tasks; push/pull, lift, move, draw/drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion for extended periods of time.
2. Physical mobility sufficient to negotiate work areas to perform the primary purpose of the position.
3. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard or devices requiring repetitive arm/hand movements.
4. Cognitive ability sufficient to perform and understand and apply simple to complex mathematical concepts.
5. Visual acuity sufficient to perform work which deals largely with preparing/reviewing reports and records, driving vehicles and for visual inspection which may involve small parts/defects in equipment.
6. Hearing acuity sufficient to receive, comprehend and understand detailed information through oral communications, telephone conversations, radio traffic, etc., and to make fine discriminations in sounds in order to perform duties safely.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work requires occasional contact with dust, noise, poor lighting, hot and cold temperature extremes, fire, odors over which no control can be exercised, or erratic humans; hazards are moderate requiring care and use of proper safety equipment and procedures to prevent injury.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Subject to 24-hour call back for emergency conditions;
2. May work non-standard hours such as early mornings, evenings, weekends and/or holidays;
3. May assist in special projects as needed or otherwise delegated;
4. Cross trained in other functional areas to assist in special projects as needed or assigned.

Possess and maintain the appropriate CO operators license with appropriate endorsements for the type of City owned vehicle which the employee may operate in the scope of employment
