Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic transfers may be considered and placed at the appropriate step level dependent upon qualifications, years of service, and approval by the Police and Fire Commission.

CANDIDATE ASSESSMENT: The candidate assessment can be accessed at the following link www.publicsafetyanswers.com/stevenspoint and must be completed no later than 8:00 PM on the posted closing date. The assessment fee is $50. SPFD will pay the fee for the first 100 candidates.
The candidate assessment is a 15-45 minute, self-administered psychometric assessment. It measures reasoning and problem-solving skills, plus 25 traits, or dimensions of personality, intended to measure an individual’s characteristics for the purpose of determining the best fit for employment in a specific position.

- Responds to Fire and / or EMS calls to rescue individuals from emergency situations. Assisting them with resolving their emergent situation.
- Respond to calls and perform suppression, exposure protection, containment, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul operations.
- Maintains a state of readiness of facilities, vehicles, apparatus, and equipment by inspections, cleaning, testing, and maintenance.
- Respond to emergency medical calls and provide service within the constraints of the department’s protocol and up to level of training.
- Function within an assigned role in an incident management system.
- Participate in drills and attend training exercises in fire fighting, equipment, hazardous materials, rescue, and emergency medical skills; successfully complete training programs in all phases of duties and responsibilities.
- Perform technical rescues such as high/low angle, confined space, trench, collapse, extrication, and ice/water.
- Respond to emergencies involving hazardous materials, and work within the level of training.
- Perform prevention and public education programs including public speaking and conducting classes in such topics as extinguisher usage, drills, and CPR/First-Aid.
- Interact with the public performing essential non-emergency duties such as prevention inspections, public education, and injury prevention education.
- Respond to non-emergency calls for assistance and safely perform assigned functions required to assist the public, including but not limited to providing information, lifting assistance.
- Perform routine maintenance and janitorial duties on buildings and grounds of the department.
- Perform inspection, maintenance, and cleaning on all emergency and non-emergency equipment and apparatus. Perform general maintenance work and upkeep of department property, facilities, equipment, apparatus and vehicles as directed.
- Perform related work as required.
New hires will be required to be Nationally Registered Paramedics within 1 year of date of hire. New hires must then remain qualified and active as Nationally Registered Paramedics or be terminated.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have a High School Diploma, GED, or HSED.
- No disqualifying felony criminal convictions during your lifetime or other disqualifying criminal history within the past seven years.
- National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS) 700 and 100 Certifications
- Must have a valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) dated within 1 year at the time of conditional job offer and or completion of the Stevens Point Fire Department Academy.
- Must have one of the following:
- Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic, State of Wisconsin licensed EMT- Paramedic, and Firefighter I Certification (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited) with the ability to complete Firefighter II Certification (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited) within 1 year of date of hire.
- Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic, State of Wisconsin licensed EMT- Paramedic with the ability to complete Firefighter I and II Certification (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited) within 1 year of date of hire.
- Firefighter I Certification (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited) with the ability to complete Firefighter II Certification (WTCS Board or IFSAC Accredited), Nationally Registered EMT-Paramedic, and State of Wisconsin licensed EMT- Paramedic within 1 year of date of hire.
- Driver/Operator-Pumper Certification
- Driver/Operator-Aerial Certification

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in all outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud.

- Drive and operate fire apparatus, ambulances, and other department vehicles; properly utilize equipment for extrication of persons trapped in vehicles or buildings.
- Maintain knowledge of streets, addresses, water supply and pre-plans within the city of Stevens Point.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all firefighting and emergency techniques and procedures authorized by the Stevens Point Fire Department.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and non-verbally, written, or electronically. Specifically, have accurately documented fire reports, fire prevention inspection reports, and patient care reports.
- Keep accurate records and use state-of-the-art technology.
- Read and interpret technical written materials, codes, ordinances, standards, protocols, and department policies.
- Establish effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, the public, and city personnel.
- Maintain physical ability and endurance to perform strenuous physical labor efficiently and effectively in threatening and stressful situations.
