Under general supervision, Recreation Leaders assist in the planning, implementation, and supervision of recreation programs, activities, and day camps; performs other related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

Recreation Leaders I through IV are distinguished from Recreation Leader V in that the latter requires a higher level of education / experience and that the assigned duties are more responsible in nature.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Assists in the oversight of the regular operation of a community center and / or gymnasium facility.
  • Provides support services to department staff.
  • Interacts and communicates with the public.
  • Conducts a variety of recreation programs including, but not limited to, games, sports, crafts, special events, day camps, afterschool, seniors, and therapeutic programs.
  • Performs light maintenance on buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure safe operating conditions.
  • Promotes a safe environment for both staff and patrons.
  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates recreational staff and volunteers.
  • Performs a variety of office and computer tasks.
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Recreation Leader I - IV

  • Must be at least (16) years of age.
  • Must submit one set of fingerprints to the California Department of Justice if 18 years of age or older in accordance with State law for all public recreation employees and volunteers who have direct contact with minors (i.e., those under 18 years).
  • Must submit to a urine drug screen as a requirement of employment if 18 years of age or older.
  • Basic CPR and First Aid certifications are desirable.
  • Recreation Leader V - (in addition to the above)

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED, and two full seasons of paid experience in planning, developing, and supervising recreational programs.
  • College-level coursework in recreation or a related field is desirable.
  • Knowledge of :

  • Rules and skills involved in one or more recreation activities.
  • Ability to :

  • Participate with children in games and sports activities that involve running, bending, squatting, jumping, and reaching;
  • Withstand working in an outdoor environment, sometimes standing for periods of up to one hour while supervising children in activities;
  • Lean, stoop, and bend to set up or break down equipment;
  • Push, pull, and drag to move equipment and supplies or to lift and carry equipment or supplies typically weighing 40 pounds or less;
  • Reach below shoulder level to pick up equipment, or reach above shoulder level to assemble equipment or hang banners;
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with the public, students, and staff;
  • Lead and organize groups in activities; and
  • Work with and relate to people of all ages.
  • Physical / Mental Abilities :

  • Mobility - Frequent sitting and walking; occasional bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting;
  • Lifting and carrying - Occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds;
  • Vision - Ability to read fine print, and / or normal type size print and detect color; ability to read and see PC screens; ability to read and produce printed material and information displayed on a visual display terminal;
  • Dexterity - Frequent repetitive use of hands; occasional power grasping, fine manipulation, push and pulling of both hands, and reaching;
  • Hearing / Talking - Ability to detect specific noises, proper equipment operation; ability to understand what people are saying in normal conversation, over the telephone, frequently over noise
  • Special Requirements - Frequently work days and weekends; occasionally work evenings; frequent driving;
  • Emotional / Psychological - Ability to concentrate, make decisions, work with the public, exercise sound judgment, handle stressful situations, and work alone;
  • Environmental Conditions - Occasional to frequent exposure to noise, outdoor conditions, indoor cold / heat, exposure to extremes in temperature, humidity or wetness; work with bio-hazards such as blood borne pathogens, sewage, waste, etc.; walking on uneven ground; working around equipment and machinery; occasional to moderate risk of exposure to hazardous materials (i.e., dirt, dust, gas, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, pool chemicals); and
  • Working Conditions - Office environment; out of doors; quiet / loud; exposure to hazardous fumes possible, but not usual.
