The City of Stockton is seeking to fill two (2) Mechanic II (Light) vacancies . Under general supervision, this is a journey-level position in the Fleet section of the Public Works Department that maintains and repairs a wide variety of vehicles. As a Mechanic II (Light), you'll be responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide variety of vehicles, including sedans, light and medium trucks. You’ll bring your expertise to the table, ensuring the fleet stays in top shape and runs smoothly for the City’s public works operations. The ideal candidate will be experienced in reading and interpreting vehicle schematics and wiring diagrams, with a solid foundation in general vehicle repair.

Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by Operating Engineers' Local 3 Trades and Maintenance Unit (Classified/Represented).
This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. - Diagnoses, troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs automotive and light truck systems and subsystems, including simple hydraulic systems. The majority of the work (approximately 80%) relates to preventative maintenance inspection in the following areas:
- Engine repair
- Automatic transmission/transaxle
- Manual drive train and axles
- Suspension and steering
- Brakes
- Electrical/electronic systems
- Heating and air conditioning
- Engine performance and driveability
- Installs, modifies, and repairs a wide variety of gasoline, alternatively fueled, and diesel-powered vehicles and related equipment used by City departments.
- Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and plans in performing work assignments.
- Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools.
- Operates and maintains a variety of electrical/electronic instruments and diagnostic equipment, including diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, and multimeters.
- Utilizes personal computers to download manufacturers’ recommended software and searches the Internet for resources related to the work.
- Completes a variety of written reports related to the work.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Four (4) years of experience with the City of Stockton as a Mechanic I,
Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program in automotive repair,
Successful completion of an accredited college automotive program or trade school program and two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Mechanic I class.
Other Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.
- Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove or install parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able and willing to work evening, night, and/or weekend shifts.
- Methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment and their related systems and components, including simple hydraulic systems;
- Simple and complex automotive diagnostic equipment;
- Hand, power, and shop tools and electrical/electronic instruments (such as diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, multimeters, etc.) commonly used in the trade;
- Shop mathematics;
- Personal computers and the Internet;
- Occupational hazards and safe work practices, methods, and regulations relating to the repair of fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnosing, maintaining, installing, modifying, and repairing a wide variety of small gasoline, alternatively fueled, and diesel-powered vehicles and related equipment used by City departments;
- Operating and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and electrical/electronic instruments (such as diagnostic equipment, etc.);
- Using the Internet as an information resource;
- Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, and drawings;
- Understanding and applying shop mathematics;
- Understanding and following written and oral instructions;
Exercising independent judgment and initiative without close supervision; - Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work;
- Working both independently and within a group to deliver products that may require both environments to complete.
The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include an oral or a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
