NATURE OF WORK: The Public Works Laborer is responsible for performing manual labor and operating various equipment to assist in maintaining and repairing the City’s infrastructure and public facilities. The position involves working on roadways, sanitation, parks, utilities, and other public works projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor and includes tasks that require both physical effort and attention to safety standards.
Needs and Expectations:
- Maintain and repair city roadways (patching, spreading chemicals, gravel, salt in winter).
- Mow city right-of-ways in summer, plow roads in winter.
- Paint road signs and signals on newly repaired roads.
- Operate and maintain public works equipment (backhoes, dump trucks, snowplows, etc.).
- Assist in repairs, maintenance, and construction tasks.
- Report equipment malfunctions to supervisor.
- Assist in repairing damaged public infrastructure.
- Install, repair, and maintain street signs.
- Maintain and repair public works buildings, yards, and other structures.
- Remove dead animals from roadways as needed.
- Assist with tree maintenance (trimming or cutting).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Works Manager.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Experience in public works, construction, or equipment operation a plus.
- Some knowledge of roadway maintenance and repair.
- Ability to operate various public works equipment.
- Knowledge of safety practices for equipment and hazardous materials.
- Ability to follow instructions and interact professionally with the public.
- Basic knowledge of city geography and utilities is desirable.
- Moderate to intense physical effort (stooping, kneeling, lifting up to 100 lbs).
- Long periods of standing or walking.
- Ability to perceive colors, sounds, odors, textures, and visual details.
- Effective communication and ability to follow instructions.
- Exposure to dirt, dust, temperature extremes, noise, and other hazards.
- Work may involve traffic-heavy areas, requiring safety gear (gloves, jackets, helmets).
