What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Maintenance Mechanic position at City of Suffolk?
Under general supervision, performs skilled maintenance and repair of water treatment plant equipment and related facilities for the City Public Utilities Department. Work involves maintaining and lubricating the water treatment plant pumps and motors, maintaining plant electrical equipment, calibrating and adjusting meters, and maintaining facilities and surrounding grounds. Employee is also responsible for documenting equipment repairs and inspections, assisting with the maintenance of parts inventories, and responding to emergency repair calls. Employee must exercise some independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Reports to the Maintenance Manager and/or Assistant Maintenance Manager.

- Performs maintenance and repair of water plant equipment and facilities; lubricates and checks water pumps; installs and maintains electrical equipment essential to the water treatment process.
- Overhauls motors and pumps, as necessary.
- Performs general water plant facility maintenance including all electrical, carpentry and plumbing repairs.
- Maintains logs and records of maintenance work performed, orders emergency parts and maintains a constant inventory of essential parts and equipment.
- Monitors and maintains City-owned wells, water towers, pump stations, and vaults located in residential and commercial areas.
- Calibrates and adjusts monitoring, electronics, and process logic controllers (PLC), as necessary.
- Performs landscape maintenance tasks on grounds around water treatment plants and other facilities.
- Assists in maintaining replacement parts inventory.
- Participates in continuing education/safety program with other plant employees, in all areas of industrial operation, in accordance with O.S.H.A. standards.
- Rotates in on-call pool to respond to after-hours calls to perform emergency repair work to water plant and wells system.
- Performs other related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the principles of electrical and mechanical maintenance as applicable to water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Knowledge of the common practices, tools, methods and techniques used in the electrical and mechanical maintenance, carpentry and plumbing trades.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and proper safety precautions involved in water and wastewater treatment operations.
- Knowledge of the principles of the operation of pumps, motors and related treatment plant equipment.
- Skilled in the use and care of common tools and equipment employed in the electrical and mechanical maintenance and installation, carpentry and plumbing trades.
- Ability to operate machinery used in mechanical and landscape maintenance.
- Ability to detect and repair malfunctions in mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to prepare and maintain simple records.
- Ability to perform physical labor for extended periods of time, possibly under arduous conditions.
- Ability to maintain readiness to work on a 24-hour, call-in basis.
