What are the responsibilities and job description for the Water Operator position at City of summit?
The Water Operator is responsible for the daily operation, maintenance, and monitoring of water distribution systems. This position ensures that safe and clean drinking water is delivered to the community in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor, operate, and maintain wells, pumps, storage tanks, and distribution lines.
- Collect and analyze water samples to ensure compliance with water quality standards.
- Record and interpret operational data, including flow rates, and pressure readings.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on equipment and systems.
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions or system issues; assist with repairs and troubleshooting.
- Maintain accurate logs, reports, and regulatory documentation.
- Ensure compliance with EPA, DEQ, and other applicable water regulations.
- Respond to emergency situations such as water line breaks, pressure loss, or contamination events.
- Work with the public and other departments to address water service issues.
- Participate in on-call rotations, weekend shifts, and after-hours responses as needed.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED (required); vocational training in water treatment or a related field is a plus.
- Valid state-issued Water Operator License (Class I, II, III, or IV depending on system size and complexity). Or the ability to obtain the Water Operator License
- Ability to read meters, gauges, and control panels; familiarity with SCADA systems is a plus.
- Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong attention to detail and record-keeping ability.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, loud equipment, and confined spaces.
- Requires lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, climbing, and standing for long periods.
- Must be available for emergency call-outs and shift work, including nights and weekends.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $13.50 - $16.50 per hour
