We are offering a $10,000.00 sign-on bonus for the position of Senior Building Inspector.

Position Summary:
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of complex technical and administrative work in reviewing development operations to verify conformity with all approved building plans and specifications for the Building Department. 

Position Scope:
This is a senior-level tradesman and position and Essential Personnel

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Performs systematic site inspections of skilled trades work for new and existing construction within the City to ensure compliance with all applicable city, county, state, and federal code and regulatory requirements in the building/structural trade.
  • Verifies compliance with approved building permits, plans, and specifications; reviews and approves work of completed projects. 
  • Orders portions of a building or structure to be exposed for inspection and/or orders a halt in construction work or vacating of the building if occupancy or use is contrary to established regulations as needed.
  • Collaborates with independent contractors and subcontractors, engineers, architects, homeowners, and internal administrative support to ensure all required documentation is completed and submitted for approval of requested permits and licenses. 
  • Reads, interprets, and performs reviews of blueprints and specifications for construction plans and designs to ensure compliance with all applicable city, county, state, and federal codes and regulatory requirements in the building/structural trade. 
  • Recommends a variety of methods, materials, equipment, and alterations in order to assist with adherence to accepted standards.
  • Identifies compliance problems and issues code violations; meets with violators and general public to explain and interpret applicable codes and advises violator of expected time frame to correct infraction; performs re-inspection to determine if corrections have been made to achieve compliance. 
  • Issues written violations of codes and conducts re-inspections to determine if corrections have been made to achieve compliance. 
  • Reviews, maintains, and updates all files, documents, records and reports of inspections activities and findings. 
  • Communicates with Building Official and Chief Building Inspector on any structural problems, code issues, or regulatory requirements that have not been resolved.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and regulatory developments for application to functional areas under charge; attends annual continuing education courses for re-certification. Interacts courteously and tactfully with managers, co-workers, customers, and/or vendors.
  • Testifies in court and before related boards, obtains relevant documentation, and prepares testimony as required.
  • Identifies and/or recommends cost control measures in the delivery of all services and functions in his/her department and under his/her area of responsibility.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Knowledge of all functions relevant to the processing and approval of building construction projects in the respective trade/discipline, e.g., plans review, licensing, permitting, and inspections. 
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of building inspection and thorough knowledge of the State and Florida Building codes.
  • Knowledge of the full scope of the department’s functions, applicable local laws, county and city ordinances and regulations, and State statutes that have a bearing on the department.
  • Knowledge of the rules established by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulations.
  • Knowledge of the functions of the Miami-Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals, including their certification and educational programs.
  • Knowledge of O.S.H.A. standards, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and methods.
  • Skill in the review and interpretation of construction project plans and the technical interpretation of applicable construction codes and regulatory standards. 
  • Skill in written communications for the effective development and presentation of departmental reports and modifications to established codes and ordinances.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. 
  • Ability to provide plans review oversight and recommend/develop modifications as necessary to ensure overall project compliance with applicable codes and regulatory standards. 
  • Ability to use and interpret building codes, accessibility codes, mechanical and plumbing terminology and language used within the department.  
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment, e.g., computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees, departmental staff and management, contractors, engineers, architects, and property owners.
Required Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience in the inspection of High-Rise/Multi-family buildings.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing plan reviews.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
  • A Florida Registered Architect, Florida Professional Engineer, or Florida General Contractor License with at least 5 years of experience.
  • Standard Building Inspector and Plans Examiner Licenses from the Florida Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must meet all other licensure requirements set forth by the Miami-Dade County Chapter 8 and the Board of Rules and Appeals.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in various indoor and outdoor environments. Frequently required to see, hear, and talk with employees and the public. Frequently required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means.   Frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.  Frequently required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and operate a motor vehicle. Occasionally required to climb or balance. Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Additional Information:
  • There is a one-year probationary period.
  • It is the responsibility of the incumbent to maintain their licenses and/or certifications as a job requirement.

Salary : $73,974 - $121,318
