A Police Officer performs a wide variety of duties connected with general police work including investigation and general enforcement of laws and ordinances in the City of Superior, in addition to advancing the mission of the Superior Police Department. A Lateral Transfer Police Officer must have one year of full-time law enforcement experience and be eligible to become a Certified Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire. Upon hire, a Lateral Transfer Police Officer will be credited with their years of full-time law enforcement for the purposes of wage placement, vacation accrual, and minimum experience for Detective application. The Lateral Transfer Police Officer must successfully complete 14 weeks of on-the-job field training, in addition to passing a 12 month probationary period.

Employment Standards
Knowledges : Working knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement; laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement; first aid; and geography of the City of Superior and surrounding area. Some knowledge of court proceedings and proper investigative practices.
Abilities : Ability to successfully complete a 14 week on-the job field training program; prepare clear and concise reports; operate a computer; speak clearly and effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department personnel and the general public; provide credible testimony in a court of law; use a firearm and other equipment; drive a police vehicle; work under adverse weather conditions; work varied shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; and use good judgment, integrity and tact.
Requirements / Special Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen. Must have no serious criminal convictions. Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire. Must have earned a high school diploma or GED, and have completed 60 accredited semester credits / units of college. Must have accurate color vision. Must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20 / 200 in each eye corrected to 20 / 20 vision in one eye and not worse than 20 / 40 vision in the other eye. A satisfactory history of soft contact lens wear for more than one year with vision corrected to 20 / 20 in one eye and no worse than 20 / 40 in the other eye, is also accepted.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
License Requirement : Must become certified as a State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Officer prior to hire and maintain such certification.
Driver License Requirement : Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Residency Requirement : Must reside and maintain principal residence within a forty-five minute driving time to the corporate limits of the City of Superior within 6 months of completion of probationary period (per City policy).
Background Investigation : Must pass a background investigation prior to hire.
Post Job Offer Psychological Examination and Medical Examination Requirement : Must pass a psychological exam, a medical exam and a drug screen for the position prior to hire.

EXAMINATION PROCESS :
WRITTEN EXAM "The National Police Officer Selection Test" (POST) :
Lateral Transfer candidates will not be required to take the written exam.
PHYSICAL READINESS TEST & INTERVIEW :
We will be giving the Law Enforcement Academy Physical Readiness Test (PRT) to you here in Superior. You will be required to pass the Exit Standards test. This is the same test that candidates are required to pass at the end of the recruit academy.

You must pass an oral exam and a physical readiness test to be placed on the eligible list. Veteran's Preference points will be assigned prior to calculating the final score for ranking on the eligible list. Lateral transfer applicants will be placed on the certified list if there is less than five certified WI law enforcement officers on the current certified list. Following these tests, candidates on the certified hire list must complete and pass a background investigation to be considered for appointment. Finally, candidates must pass a psychological examination, post job offer medical examination and drug screen to receive a probationary appointment.
The eligible list established through this process will be used for filling vacancies for a two year period from the date the list is established. The list can be extended up to 3 years by the Police and Fire Commission.

The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2025 annual deductible is : $3,300 for Single coverage & $6,600 for Employee 1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,650 / $3,300 (2025 amounts) of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2025, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country! : You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 6.95% of gross wages (2025 rate). The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, which is 14.95% in 2025 (total of 21.9% going into your retirement benefit). Wisconsin statutes prohibit opting out of the WRS benefit.
3) Life Insurance : Eligible for life insurance on the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment. Ability to purchase up to five times your annual salary of coverage on yourself, and you can also purchase spouse / dependent coverage. If you do not apply when first eligible (within 30 days of start date), you will be required to complete an evidence of insurability.
4) Vacation / Sick Leave : Will accumulate from first day of employment to become available after successful completion of your 12-month probationary period. 40 hours of vacation may be carried over into a subsequent calendar year.
5) Paid Parental Leave : Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employee's child, or placement of a foster child.
6) Compensatory Time : Compensatory time (in lieu of overtime) can be accrued to a total maximum of 120 hours each calendar year. Unused comp time is paid out the first payday in December each year.
7) Floating Holidays : 36 hours / year. Floating holidays will carry over in the first year, but must be used in the subsequent calendar year or they will be lost.
8) Personal Day : 12 hours available after completion of probationary period. Personal day hours must be used in the year received or they will be lost.
9) Longevity pay when eligible as follows :
After twenty five (25) years of service, employees will receive an additional 3% of their base salary.
10) Uniform Allowance : New officers will be provided their uniform of 2 pants, 2 long sleeve shirts and 2 short sleeve shirts and will not receive a uniform allowance until the next department uniform allowance payout after they have completed one year of service. Thereafter, uniform allowance shall be .65% of the Master Officer rate ($511.33 for 2025), paid on or before February 28th, of each year.
