Maintenance Worker I Water/Gas/Streets
JOB INFORMATION:
The Maintenance Worker I Water/Gas/Streets is classified as a Regular, full-time Employee as defined by
the City of Susanville's Employee Manual. The Maintenance Worker I is part of the Public Works
Department, is represented by the Public Works Bargaining Unit and is compensated at Range 123-125 of
the Unit's salary matrix.
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance
work and operates a variety of tools in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement
of city water, geothermal, gas, street and storm drainage facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works directly with crew in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City's water, geothermal,
natural gas and street divisions;
Does routine work of excavating trenches and backfilling;
Operates hand, air and power tools in skilled and unskilled work;
Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such as crew trucks, dump trucks,
pickups, backhoe/loaders, trenchers, air compressors, air tools, and knows the proper and safe use of
safety equipment;
Keeps tools and equipment in a safe and clean working condition;
Does general cleanup work;
Responds to emergency calls after normal duty hours as required;
Follows oral and written instructions;
Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work being performed or tools and
equipment used;
Perform other duties as needed and assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and
write at a level required for successful job performance.
- Must have a valid California Driver's license and/or be able to acquire a Class A
certification within 12 months

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the
employee is regularly required to use hands to feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with
hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee has to walk,
sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or
move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job
include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to
adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The
employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid
conditions and vibrations. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally
exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock.
