WATER SYSTEM OPERATOR II
JOB INFORMATION:
The Water Operator II is classified as a Regular, full-time Employee as defined by the City of
Susanville's Employee Manual. The Water System Operator II is part of the Public Works
Department, is represented by the Public Works Bargaining Unit and is compensated at Range
133-135 of the Unit's salary matrix.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Water Utility Supervisor, the Water System Operator II
performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of
equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of city water,
geothermal, gas, street andstorm drainage facilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains a variety of records relating to inspections, construction, maintenance activity, and
monitors water and geothermal supplies within the city's system.

Maintains and makes repairs on telemetering equipment, geothermal, domestic water wells,
springs, pumps, chlorination equipment on the city'sdistribution systems.

Responds to customer complaints on water, geothermal, gas, or streets andcan evaluate or
rectify the situation and report findings to supervisor.

Contacts residents and business owners in areas where service will beinterrupted and explain why
and when their service will be reinstated.

Assist in training of lower-level employees and performing the duties of construction, maintenance
and operational activities designed to provide quality water, geothermal, gas, street and drainage
service for the city.

Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment, such ascrew trucks, dump
trucks, backhoe/loaders, air tools, safety equipment and be able to identify and locate
underground utilities.

Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance of projectsas part of a crew,
including pavement cutting, ditch digging, main and service line repair and new installations of
water, geothermal, gas, streets, and storm drains.

Insure the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning andinspection daily.

Responds to emergency calls after normal duty hours as required

Perform all duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May supervise/lead small crews as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability toread and
write at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Four (4) years hands on experience inconstruction, maintenance, and customer service in

operations and repair procedures of a water and geothermaloperating systems.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade I Certificate from theCalifornia State
Department of Health Services and/or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months.
  • Have a valid California Driver's License and/or be able to acquire a Class Acertification

within twelve (12) months.

  • Must have completed a Competent Person Training Class.
Additional Experience or Ability to:
  • Follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Deal tactfully with the public.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather
conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently
exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations. The employee occasionally works in
high, precarious placesand is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or
caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the
duties of this job, the employee is regularly required touse hands to finger, handle, feel or
operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is
required to stand andtalk or hear. The employee has to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop,
kneel, crouch or crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25
pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilitiesrequired
by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth
perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
