Position Description

Tacoma Power's Rates, Planning and Analysis division is looking for a Portfolio Risk Modeling Intern to join their team this Summer 2025!

The Intern will get the opportunity to apply their skills and gain valuable experience working with the Energy Risk Management (ERM) team to support a variety of risk modeling related projects, including model standardization, enhancements, and process automation. There will be additional opportunities to shadow other functions within Energy Risk Management as well as participate in projects supporting enhanced reporting to executive leadership. The ERM team works closely and collaboratively with Tacoma Power’s wholesale trading function, affording the Intern broad exposure to wholesale energy trading and risk management mechanics.

Responsibilities Include :

Assist in the development of enhancements to load and price simulation models.

Support risk modeling efforts through code standardization and documentation.

Collaborate with the Principal Data Analyst integrate new data sources for enhanced reporting efforts.

The expected duration of the internship 40 hours per week for approx. 12 weeks in Summer of 2025.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Experience

1 year of post-high school training

  • Equivalency : 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

Knowledge & Skills

Effective at problem solving & research

Proficiency in Python, R, or C

Ability to use software such as R Studio and Microsoft 365 Suite of programs

Effective communication and listening skills

Desired Skills :

Excellent oral, written, & visual communication skills

College Junior or Senior or recent graduate in the Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Economics, or Data Science fields

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit : Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases : Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation : Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
