Position Description

Tacoma Public Utilities Power Management division is currently recruiting for a Resource Operations and Data Analyst Intern! This opportunity is for engineering students to apply their engineering studies, receive hands-on experience, and work side-by-side with experienced professionals on challenging and fun engineering projects.

This is a full-year hybrid internship. In the summer, a 40-hour work week is expected. In the fall, winter and spring, 0-20 hours are expected dependent on schoolwork load. The term of the position is expected to coincide with the typical summer break for college students, with an end of May or middle of June start date.

The Resource Operations team is an integral part of the Power Management division. The unit is responsible for bringing affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly power to our customers. As a unit we plan our hydro resource portfolio operations, power marketing, coordinate with risk management, and outage planning. As an intern in the Resource Operations team, you will use scientific methods to write and update models using R or Python for automation and improved analytics. In this role you will help with documentation of existing and new processes, learn about our hydro-electric portfolio projects, FERC license constraints and interact with operations and trading, engineering, project staff, risk team and others.

Responsibilities Include :

  • With guidance, support the team using scientific methods, processes, and algorithms to help maintain and improve our operational tools using R or Python.
  • Analyze power management data (input / output) and create dashboards or reports.
  • Documentation of existing and new processes.
  • Getting to know our stakeholders to understand why we do what we do.
  • Prepare summary and presentations related to work and analysis performed during internship.

Other Employment Information

Direct Deposit : Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

Salary Increases : Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

Union Affiliation : Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
