The City of Tacoma has an opportunity for a proven professional with great communication and leadership skills to manage the Street Operations Division of the Public Works Department.
The Public Works Department provides critical services for our city, our community, our residents, and visitors. The Department’s employees allow our city to function by tending to our infrastructure needs and improving our surroundings. Safety, cleanliness, and efficient operations of our streets, buildings, and facilities are our primary objectives.
As a key member of the Public Works Department Management Team, the successful candidate will support the mission of the Department to provide essential public infrastructure and services that enhance the quality of life for the residents of Tacoma in a fair, responsive, sustainable, and equitable manner.
Under the direction of the Public Works Director and Assistant Public Works Director, the Street Operations Division Manager provides leadership and direction to approximately 90 full-time employees, including four direct reports. This Sr. leader is responsible for creating and maintaining an operating biennial budget of $43.9 million dollars. The programs and services in the Street Operations Division include street maintenance, operation and maintenance of the City’s Asphalt Plant, grounds maintenance, signs and markings, and emergency response.

Qualifications

Minimum Education*
Bachelor's Degree in engineering, business or public administration or directly related field.
Bachelor’s Degree in construction management is desired.
Minimum Experience*
Seven years of experience in the public works field, including two years prior as supervisor or manager.
*Supervisory experience within a Public Works Department may be substituted for formal education on a year-for-year basis.
Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
Valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

- Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing. Candidates must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the City Manager, City Council, City Staff, and internal and external customers.
- A demonstrated commitment to anti-racist transformation in the workplace and delivery of services.
- Proven experience managing the development and implementation of a budget with excellent financial acumen.
- Skill in presenting in front of a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- A strategic thinker who knows how to paint a picture of the Department and Division's vision and strategy.
- Knowledge of street construction, maintenance, and asphalt plant operation principles.
- Skill in personnel management and ability to manage represented employees.
- Ability to interpret and negotiate collective bargaining agreements.
- Knowledge of traffic control.
