General Statement of Job
Performs a variety of routine and non-routine beautification, maintenance, and repair activities on city facilities, grounds, and roadways. Work involves physical labor and the operation of power tools, equipment, and vehicles, standard to conducting indoor and outdoor custodial and building maintenance activities, irrigation system repairs, and landscape activities. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Public Services personnel and the public.
Work is performed under general supervision with limited latitude in the use of initiative. Position exercises some judgment in accordance with well-defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Reports to assigned Supervisor or designee.
Essential Job Functions

Performs a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks as assigned including, but not limited, to planting trees, shrubs, and flowers, installing sod, raking and blowing natural debris, applying pesticides, herbicides and fertilizer, and mowing grass.
Performs a variety of general maintenance and cleaning tasks to maintain grounds of parks and recreation facilities; removes trash, cobwebs, litter, and other debris.
Maintains the cleanliness, functions, and appearance of athletic fields; uses specialized machinery to groom clay infields and apply lines on playing fields; performs turf maintenance functions such as top dressing, aerating, fertilizing, and spraying of chemicals.
Opens and closes public gates at appropriate times; turns athletic field lights on and off as required for evening sporting events.
Assists in the restoration and construction of city park sites.
Performs manual labor for departmental and citywide special events including, but not limited to, assembly and setup of equipment as specified on diagrams; erecting and dismantling tents, portable stages, and seating; and general cleanup before, during, and after event.
Maintains assigned equipment in proper condition and repair and performs general laboring tasks related to landscape and grounds maintenance work.
Removes fallen and standing trees from city streets and grounds; trims branches from trees to preserve pedestrian and motorist visibility of street signs, stop signs, and traffic lights; cuts and removes dead or diseased trees.
Performs required site work during landscape construction projects including preparation and restoration of site.
Assists in the repairs and installation of irrigation systems.
Picks up refuse and litter along publicly maintained roadways and grounds.
Performs simple maintenance on landscaping equipment; changes blades and chains according to preventive maintenance schedule.
Operates a variety of power and manual landscaping equipment and tools such as tractors, augers, skid steer loaders, trenchers, mowers, hedge trimmers, power pruners, leaf blowers, chippers, chain saws, pressure cleaner and other equipment as assigned.
Operates riding mowers and other equipment assigned including tractors, mechanical tools, vehicles, backpack sprayer, two-way radio, etc.
Drives and operates vehicles used for hauling dirt, compost and other loose materials.
Moves or aids in moving heavy containers or equipment and large or bulky objects.
Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.
Maintains quality communication and interaction with all city employees, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive city image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned to prepare for, respond to or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event or other emergency to meet the city's obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Pay and Bargaining Status
This is a non-exempt position pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is within the blue collar bargaining unit covered by the City of Tamarac and Federation of Public Employees (FPE) collective bargaining agreement. This position is paid on an hourly basis, issued bi-weekly, and subject to overtime pay in accordance with the terms of the current City of Tamarac and FPE collective bargaining agreement.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by at two (2) years of directly related grounds maintenance activities; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and / or experience.
Required Certifications and Licenses
Must possess or obtain a valid State of Florida Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) driver license within six (6) months of employment and the ability to drive a city-owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.
Possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire, Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Intermediate Certification within six (6) months of employment.
