General Statement of Job

Performs routine to moderately complex activities supporting the planning and coordination of various recreation programs, activities, special events, and projects for city residents and personnel. Work involves assisting with the daily functions of recreation, athletics, and special event programming.

Work is performed under general supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. Reports to the Parks and Recreation Site Supervisor or designee.


Essential Job Functions

Staff may also perform other duties as assigned.

Plans and conducts recreational programs, activities, and projects for diverse and specific audiences based on community needs.

Assists with the planning and implementation of large community and staff events and programs; secures entertainment, food vendors, sponsors, and volunteers as needed and assigned.

Instructs a variety of programs and classes, guides and/or trains volunteers, conducts program related athletic evaluations, and sources or identifies potential contract instructors.

Develops and/or generates transactional surveys and questionnaires to assess community needs and interests; conducts research and compiles information and reports as requested/assigned.

Monitors parks and recreation facilities to ensure a consistently clean, safe, and secure environment.

Monitors conditions of assigned equipment; prepares and processes work orders pertaining to necessary maintenance, repairs, and hazards with equipment or facilities; maintains inventory of assigned recreation and special event equipment and supplies; obtains quotes and enters requisitions for purchases as needed.

Orients participants to correct and safe use of recreational, fitness, and sporting equipment; monitors equipment use and participants’ safety and wellbeing.

Opens and closes facilities per schedule, following all established policies and procedures; follows protocol for the security alarm; sets up and breaks down spaces and classrooms per confirmed schedule.
Receives guests and responds to phone, in person, and email inquiries with complete, timely, and accurate information.

Represents the department as assigned for facility rental by outside groups; monitors contracts for adherence to specifications and requirements; prepares and/or reviews facility usage and activity reports.

Receives, reviews, prepares, submits, and maintains a variety of records, forms, documents, and files related to recreational programs and events.

Adheres to all city and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.

Maintains quality communication and interaction with all city personnel, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive city image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to, or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event, or other emergency to meet the city’s obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Pay and Bargaining Status
This is a non-exempt position pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act and is within the blue collar bargaining unit covered by the City of Tamarac and Federation of Public Employees (FPE) collective bargaining agreement. This position is paid on an hourly basis, issued bi-weekly, and subject to overtime pay in accordance with the terms of the current City of Tamarac and FPE collective bargaining agreement.


Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree in leisure services, recreation management, education, or related field required; supplemented by three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in a camp, school, recreational program, or similar environment; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience.

Required Certifications and Licenses

May be required to possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.

Must possess or obtain within four (4) months of hire, First Aid / CPR Certification, and within one (1) year of hire, Crowd Manager Certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Two (2) years of directly related experience coordinating and/or implementing athletics, recreation, fitness, and wellness programs and large special events.

To obtain veteran’s preference, a candidate MUST submit a copy of a DD-214, Certificate of Discharge, or Statement of Eligibility with their application.
