Nature Of Work
The employee in this class performs work of unusual difficulty that will focus on supporting the attraction of new businesses to Tampa, helping to grow entrepreneurship, and grow and retain existing businesses. Under administrative direction, the employee assists in the oversight responsibility for the City's Real Estate Division, the Community Redevelopment Areas (CRAs) and the Tampa Convention Center. Extensive initiative and independent judgment are required in ensuring the provision of the highest quality of municipal services while managing multiple projects simultaneously. The employee will support the administrator's mission to provide quality municipal services and customer satisfaction, while achieving a high level of productivity, efficiency and sustainability. Work is reviewed by conferences, reports submitted and results obtained. Appointed position; employee serves at the pleasure of the Mayor.
Examples of Duties
Provides high-level leadership, coordination, and strategic oversight for the following areas :
- Real Estate - Guides policies and strategic initiatives related to city-owned properties, acquisitions, dispositions, and lease agreements.
- Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) - Supports and aligns revitalization efforts across CRA districts, including the Heights, Central Park, Channel District, Downtown, Ybor, East Tampa, and Drew Park, ensuring consistency with citywide economic development goals.
- Economic Opportunity - Advances business development, workforce initiatives, and investment strategies in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Tampa Convention Center - Provides executive-level support to ensure operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and strategic growth of the Convention Center.
Serves as a liaison between the Mayor, City Council, department directors, external agencies, and community stakeholders to align initiatives with city priorities.
Facilitates interdepartmental collaboration and policy development to enhance efficiency and effectiveness across assigned areas.
Advises and supports directors in long-term planning, budgeting, and program implementation to achieve strategic goals.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of : principles and practices of planning, forecasting, and organizational analysis; methods of collection and analysis of planning data and of research design and methodology.
Extensive knowledge of : modern management practices and procedures; federal, state and local legislation impacting areas of responsibility; modern developments, current literature, and sources of information relating to utilities.
Ability to : write and speak clearly and succinctly in a variety of communication settings; effectively establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, directors, managers, the media, and others; plan, assign, direct, and coordinate the work of employees in a manner than promotes full performance; set clear objectives and measures and monitor process, progress and results.
Physical Requirements
Mostly sedentary, indoors, requires extended use of computer, typing and viewing a monitor.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's, preferably a master's, degree in public or business administration, planning or a related field and five (5) years of experience in economic development, community planning or land development, public finance, negotiating, marketing and / or administering public / private partnerships, including at least two (2) years of senior management level experience with proven planning and management experience appropriate to this level of responsibility.
Licenses or Certifications
Possession of a valid drivers' license required.
Examination
Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.
Comments
During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
