Hourly Salary Range:
Level I: $27.91 - $37.12
Level II: $34.00 - $45.23
This position is part of a flexible classification. Qualified candidates may be hired at either level based on their experience, education and training as determined by the hiring authority.

DESCRIPTION
The Fire Inspector will perform a variety of technical inspections of public, commercial, industrial, residential and other buildings and premises to secure compliance with the City's fire prevention codes and regulations; to investigate complaints and violations and require corrective action; to conduct investigations of fires, explosions and hazardous material(s) releases; and to develop fire safety codes, regulations and educational programs.
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct complex, technical inspections of buildings and property to ensure compliance with fire prevention codes and standards.
- Meet with developers, architects, contractors and various City departments to provide code interpretation for proposed development projects.
- Review documents related to new construction or tenant improvements for compliance with fire and building codes.
- Conducts inspection and acceptance tests for efficiency of fire protection equipment, automatic fire extinguishing systems, fire alarm systems and associated devices.
- Conduct inspections of facilities using hazardous materials to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations pertaining to storage, use and disposal of those materials.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Work Experience:
Level I: Experience in fire prevention and inspection work, including a working knowledge of building construction, construction materials, fire codes and standards relating to fire prevention and investigation is preferred.
Level II: Requires two (2) years of experience performing fire inspection duties comparable to a Fire Inspector I in Tempe including comprehensive knowledge of building construction, construction materials, fire codes and standards relating to fire prevention and investigation. A minimum of two (2) years of experience in fire cause investigation.
Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant’s full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.
Education:
Both Levels: Requires a high school diploma, GED or equivalency supplemented by college or trade level course work in fire science, fire prevention, fire investigation, architecture or building construction. An associate degree related to the core functions of this position is preferred.
The term “equivalent” means that directly related work experience exceeding the required work experience will substitute in equal time increments for college-level education, for example: one year of additional directly related work experience will substitute for one year of college education (30 credit hours).
Certifications, Licenses, and/or Registrations:
Both Levels:
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Level I:
- Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector I Certification, or the equivalent of a State of Arizona Fire Inspector I certification.
Level II:
- Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector I Certification, or an equivalent Fire Inspector I Certification recognized by the State of Arizona.
- An International Code Council (ICC) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Inspector II Certification is preferred.
