Description
Plant Operator I
The primary function of an employee in this classification is to learn to perform treatment operations, maintenance and repair work at water treatment, wastewater treatment and/or field site facilities based on assignment.
Plant Operator II
The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of skilled technical duties and tasks in the operation, maintenance and testing at the City's water or wastewater treatment plant facilities based on assignment. Monitor plant functions, collect samples, perform laboratory testing and adjust chemical feeds and equipment to adhere regulatory compliance.
Minimum Qualifications
Work Experience
Plant Operator I
Six (6) months of experience in water or wastewater treatment, distribution collection or maintenance of a water utility or in a related industry is preferred.
Plant Operator II
Requires two (2) years of experience in treatment operations and/or maintenance of a water or wastewater utility or in a related industry.
Candidates must have the minimum amount of work experience. Years of experience are based upon a full-time work schedule (2,080 hours per year). The sum of an applicant's full-time and/or part-time qualifying work experience must meet or exceed the stated minimum qualification. Education will not substitute for the required work experience; however, related unpaid and/or volunteer work experience may be used as qualifying work experience.
Education
Both Levels
High school diploma, GED or equivalency. Some college-level coursework in waster or wastewater treatment is preferred.
Certifications, Licenses, And/or Registrations
Plant Operator I
Grade 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator certification based on assignment.
Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Certification based on assignment.

- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Possession of or required to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ)
Grade 1 Wastewater Treatment Operator certification based on assignment.
- Possession of or required to obtain within twenty-four (24) months of hire, an ADEQ
Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Certification based on assignment.
Plant Operator II
- Possession of a valid driver's license.
- Possession of an ADEQ Grade 2 Water Treatment Operator Certification OR an ADEQ Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification based on assignment.
- Possession of or required to obtain within six (6) months an ADEQ Grade 3 Water Treatment Operator Certification
