POSITION: Meter Technician
POSITION NO: 7.111

The Meter Technician is an entry-level technical position responsible for assisting in the reading, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of utility meters. The Meter Technician ensures accurate meter readings, supports billing accuracy, and performs fieldwork related to meter operations.
Work is performed under the Utility Billing Manager’s direction and is reviewed through observation, conferences, records, and reports.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Perform work orders in the field daily, including meter reads, installations, removals, and service requests.
- Read water meters and accurately record consumption data for utility billing.
- Install, remove, and replace water meters as required.
- Perform routine inspections to ensure meters and meter boxes are in proper working condition.
- Assist in troubleshooting meter malfunctions and reporting issues to senior staff.
- Maintain detailed records of meter readings, installations, and service requests.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding meter readings and utility service concerns.
- Support meter inventory management by tracking installations and removals.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on meters and related equipment.
- Work collaboratively with billing staff to resolve discrepancies in meter data.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and city policies when performing fieldwork.
- Assist senior technician with testing and calibrating meters for accuracy.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of English; spelling; math; standard office practices, procedures, and equipment.
- Ability to learn the City’s geographical service areas.
- Basic understanding of utility meter operations and reading procedures.
- Ability to accurately record and verify consumption data.
- Knowledge of safety practices related to fieldwork and utility operations.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn meter maintenance techniques.
Training, Certification, and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- One (1) year of experience in meter reading, utility services, or a related field preferred.
- Basic experience with automated meter reading systems (AMR/AMI) is a plus.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Proof of the following NIMS/FEMA certifications will obtain preference (must be completed within the first 2 years of employment)
- ICS-100, ICS-700
Special Requirements
- Must obtain proficiency in the organization's meter reading software within six (6) months of employment.
- Must obtain Level 3 Water Distribution System Operator License within six (6) months of employment.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
The City of Temple Terrace is a drug-free workplace.
