GENERAL PURPOSE
Assumes responsibility for the performance of specialized work in the operation of heavy construction equipment and for the supervision of assigned crew members.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the close supervision of the Street Superintendent and the Assistant Street Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides direct supervision and responsible for the work performed by assigned crew members.
SAFETY SENSITIVE DESIGNATION
This position is designed as a safety sensitive position and is subject to random drug screening.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operates one or more of the following pieces of heavy duty equipment: motor grader, bull dozer, gradeall, track hoe, haul-type truck and/or heavy duty dump of twenty (20) yard capacity or more to be used on construction, maintenance, and demolition projects.
Operates equipment and supervises an assigned crew in ditching, leveling, and smoothing to grade line, curb, gutter, sideways, streets, alleys, hauling, dumping, and/or spreading of material.
Manage assigned projects that includes preparing equipment and materials to be used by crew members.
Responsible for the development and training of assigned crew members.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Performs all other functions as assigned by the Street Superintendent and/or Assistant Street Superintendent.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Five (5) years experience in the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities
- Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance
- Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment
- Ability to maintain effective preventive maintenance programs
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required. Possession of a valid Class A CDL is preferred. (No Restrictions)
- Class A CDL must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire date as condition of employment.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Power and hand tools, and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; portable radio; heavy-duty construction, maintenance, and demolition equipment; ten-key calculator; copier, fax, and phone.
