Under direction, attends a basic Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Police Officer Academy to obtain the basic skills and fitness level necessary for performance of Police Officer duties. This is the non-sworn, entry-level class in the Police Officer series. Incumbents in this classification receive training in a controlled classroom environment. Advancement to the sworn Police Officer level is based on meeting minimum qualification standards, satisfactory performance in the academy, and availability of positions.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Attend the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, Florida Department of Law Enforcement Police Officer Academy to acquire basic police skills and fitness required for officer duties.Occasionally perform non-sworn Community Service Officer duties, such as determining crime classification and whether a crime occurred.Prepare police offense and incident reports based on phone and in-person calls.Participate in case review and prepare administrative reports.Provide general law enforcement and community service information to the public.Receive and assess incoming calls, determining the caller’s identity and the nature of their call.Operate telephones, fax machines, word processors, computers, copiers, and testify as a witness in court.Direct traffic and transport police vehicles for servicing when necessary.Act as a scribe/runner for command staff during major incidents.Perform related duties as required or necessary, with responsibilities possibly changing to meet business needs.Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Knowledge of basic English, grammar, and spelling.Ability to learn laws, police procedures, law enforcement techniques, and first aid.Ability to prepare accurate records and reports.Ability to learn and apply department radio codes.Effective verbal and written communication skills.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.Capacity to professionally handle public interactions, including verbal abuse.Skilled at obtaining information through interviews, interrogations, and observations.Ability to work long hours and handle the physical demands of police work.Physical Abilities Test (P.A.T.) Requirements: Applicants for the Police Officer Recruit (POR) position must complete a Waiver of Liability and Consent Form, and a P.A.T. as part of the background process.The P.A.T. is a mandatory requirement for anyone applying for a Police Officer or Police Officer Recruit position with the City of Titusville.P.A.T. requirements are job-related and nondiscriminatory.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Possess a valid Florida Operator's License with no restrictions other than corrective lenses.Must reside within a fifty (50) mile radius of the City of Titusville.Successfully complete a physical and drug screen, fingerprinting, background check, polygraph, psychological tests, and driving record check.Able to work in a high-stress police training academy environment, including indoor classrooms and an outdoor physical abilities course, with exposure to noise, smoke, and fumes.Work may involve rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays.Must have telephone service at residence.Must meet the criteria for issuance of a notary public commission.This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current Drugs and Alcohol policy.During occasions of local emergencies this position may be required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee’s department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.PYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to move 150-pound objects up to 100 feet in an emergency. Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, running, standing, sitting, walking, and operating motor vehicle for prolonged periods of time; climbing obstructions, complete mobility of all limbs and discharging firearms; operating motorized vehicles; lifting and pushing,Additional physical abilities required: Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken English word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Ability to communicate verbally both in person and over the phone. Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.Visual Acuity: Have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles, include close vision, distant vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess the visual acuity distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things in law enforcement work.Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances. Including ability to walk in uneven terrain on a daily basis.Running: Must be able to run extended distances and apprehend fleeing suspects. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.Handling: Holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
