The DepartmentAdvancing a Safe, Accessible and Sustainable Built EnvironmentThe Community Development Department oversees three divisions including Building & Safety, Planning, and Neighborhood Services. The Department consists of a total of 75 employees, with multiple disciplines and backgrounds, make up the Department's services and specialties.

The DivisionThe purpose of the Building and Safety Division is to ensure the safety of the public, buildings, and structures through the enforcement of building codes and regulations.

The PositionAs the entry level class in the technical series, the

Engineering Technician I

GIS)

works under immediate supervision, performing variety of routine technical duties in maintaining and supporting City and departmental geographic information systems (GIS) and GIS databases; uses standard GIS tools and generates standard GIS products.

Engineering Technician I

GIS)

performs duties primarily focused on GIS data creation and maintenance to support departmental and City-Wide geographic information systems capabilities. Incumbents utilize standard GIS tools and utilities to enter and correct data in GIS databases, researching a variety of source documents to verify data accuracy and completeness, and to generate standard GIS products including maps. Work assigned involves proficiency in the use of basic to standard GIS software, tools and utilities to carry out assignments ranging from basic to routine and is performed following specific and detailed instructions as to methods, procedures and guidelines.

Education and

ExperienceAny combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be :

Equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry and trigonometry; and one to two years of experience in civil engineering or related drafting work, surveying work or customer service / permitting work.

Vocational training in drafting or computer-aided design and drafting

is desired.

License and / or CertificatesMust possess and maintain an appropriate, valid driver's license.

Ideal CandidateIn addition to the minimum qualifications, successful candidates will possess the following : Experience with ArcGIS desktop or ArcGIS Pro;Working knowledge of basic principles, practices and techniques of GIS applications; cartographic principles; and design and database management gained from formal training and / or work experience;Demonstrated skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail;Ability to organize and maintain efficient files and records;Be familiar and comfortable in utilizing computers and new technology;Ability to work independently in a fast-paced and demanding environment;A high degree of initiative and resourcefulness;Exceptional customer service and interpersonal skills; andAbility to effectively handle multiple projects and constantly shifting priorities.Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS and ArcGIS Prois

    Deferred Compensation Plan

    Sec. 4.13.B)A voluntarily 457 plan is available to all employees.Employees are automatically enrolled in the 401(a) plan upon completion of one year service.

    Retirement Health Savings Plan

    sec 4.13.C)Any hours under or equal to 600 (sick) and 600 (vacation) will be deposited into the ICMA-RC RHSP Plan, for retiring and separating employees. The remaining balance up to limits allowed by law will be disbursed into the City's 457 plan or be paid in cash.
