The City of Torrance is currently taking applications for the position of Assistant Pool Manager!
The Department
The mission of the Community Services Department is to enrich the community through the provision of recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities for persons of all abilities. The Community Services Department takes pride in “Enriching the Community through People, Programs, and Partnerships”. The Department is a diverse organization which consists of five Divisions that work collaboratively to meet the vision, mission, and goals of the department: Administrative Services, Cultural Services, Library Services, Parks Services, and Recreation Services.
The Division
The Recreation Division offers a wide variety of Aquatic Programs and Classes at the Victor E. Benstead Plunge pool year-round. The Benstead Plunge is a heated Olympic-sized 50 x 20 meter outdoor pool open year round. During the summer, the bulkhead is removed from the water for long course swimming. During the school year, the bulkhead divides the pool into two courses; a 25 yard and a 26 meter course.
The Position
The Assistant Pool Manager assigns, instructs, and supervises the Lifeguards, Aquatics Instructors, and staff at the Plunge! The Assistant Manager also checks that proper safety procedures are used for the protection of the public and pool personnel, as well as enforces rules and regulations of the pool.
Hours: This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. The Torrance Plunge operates from 4:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
One summer season as a pool lifeguard and swim instructor. No specific education minimum.
License and/or Certificates
Must possess the following current certificates at the time of appointment:
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (W.S.I.);
- American Red Cross First Aid (either multi-media, standard or advanced); and
- American Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (C.P.R.).
Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- Experience in swim lesson programming;
- Supervisory experience preferred;
- Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel is desired;
- Strong verbal and written skills;
- Excellent customer services skills.
Only those candidates whose experience best meet the needs of the City and the Department will be invited to participate in an oral interview.
Panel Interview: Weighted 100% (Tentatively scheduled the week of September 5, 2024.)
