The City of Torrance is recruiting for an Instructor I to serve at the Torrance Theatre Company!
The Department
The Community Services Department offers Torrance residents the unique opportunity to help achieve a sense of purpose, identity, self-worth and improved self-esteem within the specialized areas of Cultural Arts, Library, Parks and Recreation. The Community Services Department is committed to providing quality services, activities, programs and facilities for all those who live, learn, work and play in the City of Torrance.
The Division
The mission of the Cultural Services Division is to strengthen the City of Torrance as a unique center for cultural programs, the arts and arts education through developing the Torrance Cultural Arts Center as a unified campus for learning and excellence; providing classes, programs, and events that enrich the community through arts training and instruction for all levels of learning; creating new arts experiences and attracting new audiences; serving the unique needs of artists, connecting their work to the public and developing unique artistic resources of and for this community.
Major programs within the Division include the Torrance Art Museum, Torrance Theatre Company, Torrance Civic Chorale and hundreds of classes offered in all the arts for all ages and levels of ability at the Cultural Arts Center. The Division also produces the annual Cherry Blossom Cultural Festival in Columbia Park every spring and a Summer Concerts series at The Amphitheater at Wilson Park.
The Position
Torrance Theatre Company is a program of the Cultural Service Division of the Torrance Community Services Department. Torrance Theatre Company is committed to providing affordable, professional-quality theatre productions and related outreach and educational services to Torrance and the South Bay Area, and to creating a positive and welcoming environment where a varied group of local theatre artists can come and hone their craft while sharing their talents with the greater community. Torrance Theatre Company believes that the community becomes stronger through the shared experience of theatre, and through a diverse season covering drama, comedy, and musicals, both classics and contemporary, the community will be inspired, educated and entertained.
The Instructor I (Torrance Theatre Company) prepares lesson plans and plans, organizes, instructs, and/or directs classes in specialized discipline or topic (IMPROV, SHAKESPEARE, ACTING TECHNIQUES, SCENE STUDY, SCRIPT/CHARACTER ANALYSIS, ETC); and does related work as required.

Hours: This is a recurrent, part-time, non-civil service, as needed position. Hours are flexible but concentrated around advertised Torrance Theatre camps and programs. This position may be expected to work some evenings and weekends.Any combination of education and experience that would have provided the required knowledge and skills such as:
Five years of experience teaching the equivalent of four semester courses per year. Four of the five years may be substituted by possession of a relevant degree from a college, university, or specialized school. Significant recognized ranking in the field may be substituted for four years of the required experience.
No specific minimum of education.
Ideal Candidate:
In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess:
- Experience in studying, performing, or teaching Shakespeare, Improv, or acting of various levels and techniques, for youth and adult;
- Knowledge of arts education and programming;
- Excellent customer service;
- Effective oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those met during the course of work.
