California Applicants:
- A current Peace Officer in the State of California.
- Graduation from an Academy approved by the Torrance Police Department.
Must have graduated from a Police Academy approved by the Torrance Police Department.
Education
High School graduate.
Certificates/License
- Must possess a POST Basic Certificate.
- Valid California Driver's License (prior to appointment date).
Must be age 21 by the date of filing.Applications are accepted on a continuous basis. A copy of your POST Certificate is required and must be attached at the time of application submission.
Applications will be reviewed on a weekly basis, and only those candidates whose training and experience best meet our requirements will be invited to the examination.
Examinations will be conducted on a periodic basis depending on the needs of the City and the Department. Names of candidates will be retained on the Eligible List (List for Hire) for a period of six (6) months.

Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation to be considered for hire. The background investigation will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical evaluations, a psychological evaluation, and a polygraph.
Note for Lateral Applicants:
Upon appointment, Officers are placed in our Field Training Program. The typical requirements to complete the Field Training Program are as follows:
Lateral Officers who successfully completed a Field Training Program at a comparable agency:
- Minimum of four (4) months (last two months must be acceptable)
Lateral Officers with no prior patrol experience or who successfully completed a Field Training Program at a non-comparable agency:
- Minimum of seven (7) months (last two months must be acceptable)
