The Department

The Division
The Recreation Services Division provides recreational and educational opportunities for persons of all ages and abilities. The Division is responsible for overseeing recreation activities including youth and adult sports, management of city facilities (park buildings) and a variety of special events throughout the year.
The Position
The Community Services Department Recreation Division is seeking enthusiastic and detail-oriented professionals with recreation experience to serve as a Recreation Supervisor. There are currently two vacancies in the Department. in Adaptive Recreation and Sports and in Facility Booking and Registration. These positions conduct recreation programs and supervise part-time employees , engages in direct contact with program participants and the general public, trains recurrent personnel and evaluates staff performance, schedules aquatics activities at the Victor E. Benstead Plunge and initiates all program publicity, conducts studies and writes reports, makes budget recommendations and assists in budget implementation, and recommends the purchase of necessary equipment and supplies.
The Recreation Supervisor in Adaptive Recreation and Sports oversees the Department's programs for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. The programs include, but are not limited to: PALS (People Actively Learning and Sharing), a social club for teens and adults; Special Needs Sports, a recreational year-round sports program; and Special Olympics, a year-round competitive sports training program. The Program Coordinator also supervises recurrent staff and volunteer coaches. The Recreation Supervisor organizes and implements special events including the Annual Special Needs Sports Kick-Off Dinner and quarterly dances; serves as staff liaison to the Friends of Torrance Exceptional Athletes (FTEA) and works collaboratively with various community and civic organizations such as Special Olympics South Bay and Harbor Regional Center; and makes presentations to civic groups.
The Recreation Supervisor in Facility Booking and Registration is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the scheduling and booking of facilities and parks in the Community Services Department. This individual coordinates with the Park Rangers and divisional staff for proper supervision and use of facilities for recreational and cultural programs; provides customer service to patrons at the registration counter as well as by phone and e-mail; prepares written and electronic reports regarding rental statistics, revenue and usage; and serves as an administrator for the Facility Booking Software system. This position also trains and supervises part-time support staff in the office and at the LA Galaxy Sports Complex.

*Note: The Eligible List (list for hire) resulting from this recruitment will be valid for six months and will be used to fill future vacant Recreation Supervisor positions in any Division of the Community Services Department.Education
Graduation from college with a degree in Recreation, or related field, or completion of required coursework within a recreation related specially, or specific and substantial full-time experience which prepares one to function in this position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Related part-time experience will be credited in proportion to the average amount of time worked per year.

License Required
A valid California Motor Vehicle Operators Class 3 License.
Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- Public sector experience in Recreation;
- Experience in all aspects of program implementation including creation and design;
- Supervisory experience of employees and volunteers;
- Experience in volunteer outreach;
- Advanced experience with marketing and social media;
- Experience working within a budget;
- Computer and software skills including Microsoft Office (Word and Excel);
- Ability to work independently;
- Ability to conduct research to find out class trends and community needs and prepare proposals for pilot projects;
- Strategic problem solving skills and ability to solve issues or problems from a broad perspective;
- Willingness to implement new programs and initiatives;
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with those contacted in the course of work ; and
- Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
